You don’t even need to render the fat. I have a large suet feeder that I just put the slabs of fat in. The birds will pick the pieces clean and all your left with sometimes is little pieces of meat and a membrane occasionally. Just have to clean that out occasionally and put fresh pieces in

I’ll do it for 20 bucks. Will take more than a week though. Would have to get the rod, asses the problem guide and get one ordered. Then about one day to repair and epoxy.

Sounds like a really lazy lure seller. Have bought a bunch of lures from many different places and have never had to my own hooks on. Pretty shoddy in my mind.

I usually carry a bucket to sit on. Until I find a hot hole, then I will kneel by it. I use a short rod that I’ve made. Easier to keep the wind off of you and see the bites. And easier to get nice panfish out of the hole

As a rod builder i would suggest wrapping several rounds of masking tape around the blank. Then carefully and slowly use a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel and go around the blank and cut through the tape. Otherwise using a triangular file and going around the blank through the tape may be your best bet. You’re only doing one rod so doing it as fast and efficient as possible isn’t that great of a concern. I wouldn’t recommend using a hacksaw. One catch and it could split the blank and its all over. Been there tried that.

I’ll be out this weekend. Coldest part will be riding the 4-wheeler to the fishhouse. Doesn’t matter if the fish bite or not still better than sitting in the house doing nothing.

I bought a bunch of slim boxes from cabelas but unfortunately they have been discontinued. Link below are very similar. I really like them. I put each brand/kind of spoon in separate box. Keeps my spoons dry and organized. I just labeled the boxes on the edge with masking tape with whats in them.

On the lake where I live if I’m fishing panfish in deep water no marks I don’t bother dropping a line. In my experience your wasting your time dropping a line to nothing but maybe a small perch. In shallow water I check every hole because you just never know with the cone angle. Never spending more than a minute or two in each hole. If there’s fish in a hole I’ll camp there unless they are small.

Thanks B-man for being the better man. I do the same thing. It really pisses me off how big of slobs are out there. I strap a 30 gallon garbage can to my 4 wheeler towards spring and go out everyday till the ice isn’t safe on the lake I live on. So sad to see!!!!

Just my 2 cents stay away from rod building. Its very addicting and expensive. If your set on it I would get your blanks from basskhang.com. Very nice blanks and reasonably priced. Sportsman’s Direct also has nice blanks. All the other components you can get from a variety of places. Jann’s Netcraft, Sportsman’s Direct, Anglers workshop or mudhole.com. Just depends on what you are looking for. For information look on facebook at Custom Ice Rod Builders or Ice Rod Building. Lots of information there

Recoil guides can be broken. IMO not worth the extra money to have on a custom rod if you have to be careful when breaking ice off them. There are cheaper guides out there that are just as good or better than recoils. I use them all the time on my rods.

I build all of my own rods. Each rod I build is custom. From the blank to the handle to the thread and guides. That makes it custom. IMO tuned up rods are way over priced production rods. The bullwhip rod has a severe dead spot towards the tip which it shouldn’t. The rest of their rods are not that great either. The guide placement of the others are not where they should be. They need more guides to utilize the blanks flex. Recoil guides are not worth the extra cost as most of us do not fish outside when it gets that cold outside anyways.

I think your reel sizes are plenty big enough. I almost exclusively fish northerns in the winter. I run shimano senna 500’s or pfluger 20’s and they have stood up for years. As for line I run either 15 or 20 lb power pro. Sometimes with a leader sometimes not. Fishing northerns with mono is just asking to get cut off more often than not.

I filled out the form tonight. I was wondering if I should have gotten the email yet tonight or if that will come later.

The lake I live on in the Alexandria area was mostly iced covered yesterday. The wind opened it up today. Was hoping to be fishing by next weekend!

A single shot or bolt action rifle would be best. It will teach patience and lead to better accuracy in the long run. I learned on my grandfathers old pump 22. Every shot counts then, instead of just blowing through ammo. You can upgrade to a 10/22 or similar rifle later.

Rod drier is a must in my book. Rod building is an addicting hobby and there will be more. I took a class a few years back and it snowballed from there. I love it. If she needs some help there are some facebook pages I can give for tips and advice.

You can use wood to make a mold for j-weights. A made about 60 weights with the same board. I used an oak board that I got from my grandfather who uses them for crafts. Trace a weight and cut it out with router. If you want it heavier cut deeper but be careful as some decoys don’t have that much room to hook the weight. Found that out the hard way. I made 4 cavities in the board. I clamped the board in the bench vise to hold it. Use a lead ladle and just pour the lead into the cavities until they are full. No need for a closed mold. The lead cools fast and doesn’t burn the board. It leaves a rounded edge on the top but who cares just a decoy weight. Can’t find my mold right now or i’d post a picture.

Just south of Flin Flon Manitoba. Out on the lake fishing. Didn’t find out anything until shore lunch at noon. Not to much fishing after that. A very sad day.

I use the string stops. On braid you have to get them pulled really tight to keep them from moving. Moving up in braid size helps as well. Never had much luck with the rubber ones. Seems like they move awfully easy and they burn off if you have to move them much IMO.

waytogo great pick on the stihl farm boss. We have a MS290 farm boss with a 20″ bar. Has been a great saw for a number of years. Sometimes the longer bar is to much for even this bigger saw. We now have 4 stihls now. You won’t be disappointed in your purchase.

Just bought a used 036. Gonna be the designated ice saw. Has a 20″ bar but gonna buy a 32″ for it. We run veggie oil for cutting ice as well. Gonna grind the rakers off the chains to aid in ice cutting.

I’ve never used the pfleuger trion but have probably 5 or 6 sienna’s. The oldest ones I’ve had for maybe six or seven years. They work great. Never had an issue with them. They are very smooth running even hole hopping in -10 degree weather. The drag seems to be nice and smooth and consistent. The 500 size is perfect for ice fishing in my book and they are reasonably priced for what they are.

Never bought or used one of his rods. I’ve built rods on his ice blanks and they are top notch.
