I was hoping Lake Bemidji but it will be cutting it close with ice out.

In Bemidji I would say enough to get us to winter 2024 where we can get some fresh snow.

Check out the Visit Bemidji Fishing report (Youtube) before you head out. They may have a new update by then. At times Dick Beardsley gives out some specific details to area lakes.

Also, Lavinia landing (Bemidji) is flagged off. The plowed road there is under water.

We have had a lot of snow so many of the other local lakes would be difficult unless you had a snowmobile.

There are two main plowed roads – Northwoods landing and Nymore of Bemidji with very little in-between. There is a short road off diamond point but the landing area is a mess so getting off the lake is tough there. A four wheeler should work but things are still hairy in areas since we had a poor year for ice conditions. Dick Beardsley, local guide, nearly went thru with his truck w/shack recently.

I should expand. The wood smoker is an old clothes chest that would be at the end of the bed. It is from the 50’s. My grandmother gave it to me. I turned it on its side and took the wheels off the bottom and moved them to the side that is now the new bottom. Pop some holes for vents and for the air intake/electrical out… line the bottom with foil and BAM!

Home made smokers are a blast to create. I have made a couple that were dedicated to smoking fish. Large wood uprights to the small clay non-glazed pot design. All were using a hotplate and chip box for smoke. Winter temps not an issue. Food for thought.

I have the FL-8se with the original battery. Still kicking along and does what I ask of it. Must be 10 some years. Charge it the 1st of every month and after every use. Still tells me if half a sunflower seed shell fell into the hole and how fast it is flipping in the water.

You can also slice and lacto-ferment them. Cuts down on the heat a little. Add some garlic or whatever you favor. Then puree it when it is done for a hot sauce or strain it and cut with vinegar for a thin version. Lot of recipes to follow on youtube.

I forgot to mention DILLY CARROTS! Ferment carrot slices as you would in making dill fermented pickles. Look it up! If you closed your eyes and ate one you would have swore you just ate a crunchy dill pickle and not a carrot. No lie.

I agree – fermented cukes are the way to go! Have not done a hot bath or vinegar recipe in years. Fresh pepper slices (Serrano) with a mountain of dill is my go-to. I would also suggest trying a sample early in the fermentation. You might like it. Say about 5 days at a 71 degree room. They are just starting to get tangy and acidic – when you snap them in half they fizz harder than a shaken can of 7-UP. I usually have to burp my lids 1-2 times a day until the fermentation settles down.

I second Potato island – if the fish are not biting at least you will be entertained by all the potato sized bird droppings hitting the water around you. On some days the islands are loaded with Gulls. Blue Colorado blade spinners with leeches were my go-to.

Just a reminder to check your regulations on decal location. I made the mistake of putting new decals in the same location as the previous owner without thinking much of it. The DNR later told me that it was in the wrong order.

I vacationed on Bemidji this weekend but did not fish the lake (too windy). We did well on off shore structure on smaller sheltered lakes. When weather cooperated there was a line of boats from Diamond Point across to the Miss outlet side. The big divider if you look at a map. Not unusual for this time of year if that helps. I am not a crowd guy.

I think I will try a dry run. I think I may have a solution. If I cut in at a 45 but stop short of the thickness of the board – that may fold down. Hard to explain without a picture.

Kraut with hot dogs cubed into it. The side was biscuits with meat gravy. Now that I think about it I am not sure what the main course was?
