While we’re talking Shiners, any you guys set out traps? Usually we can get em with dip nets and a seine net in different spots but putting a trap along side the dock would be worth a try. All I have is a small tube trap, any suggestions to lure em in??

based on the thousands of shiners swimming up & down the shallows of my shoreline last weekend, there should be no shortage this season…
Already in, sheez. I figured the original post was referring to spot tail shiners.
March 27, 2024 at 4:20 pm #2263916Thanks for the heads up, we go thru quite a bit also, lately in the oven but usually grilled. Last summer I got called for a random at work and sure enough we had asparagus the night before. The nurse and I had a good chuckle afterwards.
February 26, 2024 at 6:30 pm #2256455One of our sheds at the cabin let’s the beatty eyes in. Tried lots of different methods except the cotton balls n peppermint oil. Nowadays we just put a small pail of rv antifreeze with a couple ramps leading up. Usually get around 10. And no smell come spring.

I gotta figure out what to do with the sparrows.I have a Merlin that is picking off the sparrows that often raid the bird feeder.
Can I barrow him..lol. During the summer we have a Coopers hawk that’ll control the chipmunk population under the feeders.

birds here in Cold Spring are far and few between. but they are thick at the cabin. mainly woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees. i put up one of the peanut butter feeders, small branches with holes in them, mix some sunflower seeds in the peanut butter….. after the first day they clean it out daily!!!!!You deer hunt. Keep the fat you trim off the critter and render it in the oven in an old pot or pan, strain it to get the cracklings out of it then stir in a jar of cheap creamy peanut butter and use that to stuff your feeder.
He’s gotta shoot one first..lol. I gotta figure out what to do with the sparrows. I get lots of other birds but it seems the sparrows are taking over.
February 21, 2024 at 6:11 pm #2255644I mentioned it before but I sure hate to see water temps on opener alot higher than normal. The bait fish will have come in shallow, spawned and moved out… that’s a big one fer the bait shops in our area.
February 20, 2024 at 4:24 pm #2255398The neighborhood book of faces group mentioned putting blue lights in the outdoor fixtures. Think I’ll stop at home dump and get 2 blue and a red. Should look pretty neat.
February 20, 2024 at 3:05 pm #2255351It’s still strange around here. Driving around town you always see a cop or 2, but since Sunday I havnt seen a one. Maybe just timing..
February 20, 2024 at 2:59 pm #2255348It’s funny everytime I get to go to Walmart with the mrs I go down the 1 isle of fishing stuff, ya never what you’ll find. And here I thought the south metro had the migrants working the stores, Willmar of all places is plum full of em also. My aunt from Alabama came fir a visit several years ago, never seen a Somalian, until she came here.
February 19, 2024 at 6:24 pm #2255187I do jimmy. I just mentioned the wrong thing and it exploded. Like I said I live and breathe in this town and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
February 19, 2024 at 6:00 pm #2255183oh I get it, but like said the problem should’ve never had one. Just remember, you guys have a fall out with the wife, you’ll get booked and your guns will be taken. We just got back from the station with flowers, pretty somber…
Huh?
I was right, it wasn’t worth engaging with you..
Wow.
[/quote] Sorry, what else you want me to say? It’s a pretty no Brainer. And Gim, just seen it 2 weeks ago. A gentleman spent Friday into Monday after a domestic in jail. It could be the proof you speak of but a search was done.February 19, 2024 at 4:48 pm #2255168<div class=”d4p-bbt-quote-title”>Swimjiggin wrote:</div>
I voiced my opinion in the home defense thread about guns, I’m sure lots didn’t like it but it’s the truth. Even the boys at work that own AR’s walk otta the room when the subject comes up, cuz they know it’s a gun that shouldn’t be. Anywho the wife just said another shooting going on in Brooklyn park….awesome.That’s your opinion.. I couldn’t disagree more. The type of gun makes no difference. He chose violence. It’s not the guns fault.

February 19, 2024 at 3:18 pm #2255121I seen that today also bzzsaw and a pic of him. Being a Burnsville resident going on 36 yrs this just flat out sucks, I’ve seen and talked to several officers at the city hall and the ice rink over the yrs and they are some great people. I wouldn’t wish this on any community but something needs to change. This will never end, only get worse.

The last 2 years us as a fam ( 4 adults) drove west, Rockies one year and Yellowstone the next, had a blast. With another Lab pup coming home next week we’re gonna stick to the cabin Lakes this year. In the early 90’s 6 of us rented a house boat on Namakan, pulled 2 boats behind and had a great time. It’s on my radar to get the family on board… Someday.
February 2, 2024 at 6:06 pm #2251684Thanks for the heads up Glenn!! We’re on the Kandiyohi County Lakes that made the list. Lotsa Carp were taking out last winter but more needs to be done to bring the Lakes back to what they used to be.
January 31, 2024 at 3:02 pm #2251243A fella down the street was warshing his car in the driveway today. Think I’ll jinx us all and dig out the patio furniture, that’ll make it snow!!

come opener the lakes are super lowThe thing is, even though we’re behind on snow and way behind compared to last winter, we’re actually ahead on moisture. Much of the state received 3+ inches of rain on Christmas which is approximately the water equivalent of 3 feet of snow. Lake and river levels should be in good shape right now.
But that could obviously change come opener if we head into another annual drought.
I do hope your right, although at the time of the rain we didn’t have squat for frost. Rumor has it the frost line is only down 15″ where there was no snow after last weeks cold temps.
January 26, 2024 at 4:20 pm #2250256Heard that also Glenn, kinda stinks. What I’m afraid of long run is if we have a record ice out state wide, come opener the lakes are super low and a much higher surface temp. Opener could be more like mid June water temps. Hey I know, maybe we should push for an early opener!!
January 25, 2024 at 6:49 pm #2250009For us that work outside this winter has been great, last week we faught it. Sure could use some moisture tho, would rather see snow than spring rain to help the lakes. Besides the snow chuckers have been fueled since October..
January 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm #2249627Don’t get hurt on your way to Cooperstown Joe, I’m just kidding. Good luck, was alotta fun watching you play over the yrs!
January 22, 2024 at 4:40 pm #2249464Great info, and thinking back lots of truth to the shade. I’ve been using Keitech swim baits for several yrs, not much on the chartreuse tails but trying to match the lake shiners so I’ve been using the black shad. Super soft with great movement but being soft they get ripped up fast, having a wire keeper jig is a must. So you soak yours yet even having a smelt scent? Might try that. Thanks. And never thought of putting one under a bobber..
January 5, 2024 at 4:37 pm #2245657I tried quoting and it really bogged down on the phone. One thing I do notice between this site and mno, is there is more bickering here, maybe its because of more people, who knows. Although if James really did care for the forum he’d either post or let us know personally.. just my 2 cents.
December 29, 2023 at 1:30 pm #2244479We’re doing bacon wrapped asparagus also thumper, along with ribeyes, crab legs, scallops and coconut shrimp. After chowing I know I won’t make midnight..
December 16, 2023 at 4:10 pm #2242233That loss is on the HC
Got that right. You guys see Flores barking in O’Connells ear during the last drive? Tells it all…
August 16, 2023 at 6:58 pm #2219259Very nice set up , I’d love to be on a queit lake. Although having neighbors isn’t bad. Our neighbors 2 doors down have a small solar panel hooked up to a battery that runs their boat lift. We run a 100′ cord but there’s would be way more than that. Thinking I’ll do the same at some point.
August 7, 2023 at 6:22 pm #2217959I get what you guys are preaching, being prepared for the absolute worst-case scenario. Not me, it won’t happen. I just got back from Grizzly country, I felt more compelled carrying their than in downtown..
August 7, 2023 at 3:35 pm #2217933No, that’s the law big_g. Sure the day may come when someone tries to bash open a door in the house, go for it I say, see what happens. No night stand gun here, cuz I’m not afraid and no little kids will find loaded pistols stashed around the house, see the news lately. The pooches will give away your location, then your mine..
