It seems there is some irony in the fact that hunters are the main reason there is habitat for swan and sandhill crane populations to rebound, but special regulation is now needed to protect the growing population.

It’s been a pretty rough 2 years, but I think Ben deserves some more time to get things on track. He had to start from scratch when nearly all the Pitino players transferred. Ben brought in a bunch of his own transfers, most of which were not highly touted players, and coached them to being competitive in many games. This year is his first with some of his own recruits.

I watch just about every game and this freshman group is showing promise, but it is tough in the Big 10…when most other teams have a lot more experience. Their biggest issues are turnovers and free throws (worst in the country). Most teams will struggle to win games shooting ~60% from the charity line. Most of the games where they have limited the turnovers have been competitive. Some injuries have added to the trouble. It’s too bad about Dennis Evans deciding to ask for a release from his commit, but if he’s having doubts before even showing up he was likely a big transfer risk after a year anyway. If Ben can keep this core group and add a couple solid players each year, I think he can do really well and will be a guy who will stay around to build the program. If Battle and Garcia don’t transfer, they have an opportunity to lead a turnaround (I’m still optimistic!) and provide much needed upper-class leadership. One positive I see is the team still playing hard, even with the painful year, and the team continues to show some improvement. With Pitino, many of his teams started out looking pretty good and by late season they started going downhill fast.

at least MLB is now trying to produce a better product, this year they have new rules around pitch timers and heavily reduced all the infield shifting…

The whole shifting thing really irritates me. Why doesnt someone just slap down a bunt to the opposite side? There are ways to beat it, but it seems like there is some dumb unwritten rule that people to try and counter it.

I think the same thing about bunting, for guys that can’t seem to hit to the opposite field. But then I watch the Twins (and most other MLB teams) try to bunt and understand why. I don’t know if they don’t practice bunting anymore but most players really struggle when asked to lay down a bunt. They even look uncomfortable – they don’t get squared-up and try to “punch” at the pitch. Bunting is a lost art in the modern game of only swinging for the fences.

Any recommendations on brands that are good, or to avoid? Whopper Stopper loves his Modine. Other thoughts?

Nice fish Dirk! If you had to pick one river for the best chance at a nice flathead, what would it be?

My spring quest for a big crappie finally paid off this year…earlier this week. A 17″ from a metro lake I didn’t think had that size of fish. It was a great surprise! Gimruis – you never know when your efforts will pay off.

I’ve had many of the same issues with the Big Buddy – works fine until it gets really cold, like around 0 F and then won’t light or if it lights it won’t stay lit. Purchased the right hose, cleaned it from top to bottom, tried propane bottles and tanks…even stopped using full tanks to allow for gas expansion. I finally gave up and bought a Nu-Way – it’s a little clunkier to haul around but lights every time and stays lit. I also seen many plastic tabs cracked or broken – I cobbled the thing back together and now only use it when working in the garage and want a little extra heat.

I’ve had a couple of reports today of smaller McLeod county lakes having ~5″.

Wallyhntr1 – I was already planning on hitting Tonka for the opener…your post has me really ready to get on the water. I fish Minnetonka occasionally, but have not chased walleyes that much, and certainly don’t have your type of experience. Do you have any general recommendations/thoughts that would increase the odds of success for the opener (not asking for specific spots or anything like that)?

Out on P2 Saturday afternoon and caught 1 little ‘eye, a 16″ sauger, and a couple of sheepies. I agree it was a great day on the river!

No good installation pics as the tabs broke when I was out over the weekend. When originally mounting the ears to the pivot piece, both ears cracked so I hit them with some Gorilla glue and coated with high-strength epoxy. That obviously worked for about a year. The original ‘ducer with the temp. sensor issue was installed the same way for 2 years with no issues.

Not a high-speed boat – Lund Fisherman with 115 Johnson, so topping out at about 35 mph.
