Minnesota State Record Sturgeon

Don’t know if anyone saw the Star Tribune today with the “unoffical” Minnesota State Record sturgeon caught on the Rainy River this past weekend. Believed to be 100+ lbs. And it was boated by a couple of IDO’ers. In the picture on the left is the co-angler “Irishman” from IDO and his brother in law who caught the monster.

Lucky me, I was supposed to be on the trip but backed out the last minute. Would have been fun to witness.

    Their smiles are 72 inches!

That had to be a riot! Even on heavy gear a 60″ fish will have her way with the angler!

All I can think of it must be about the closest thing to catching Michael Phelps !!

2008 we had a group at Ballards and one of the gals in the group latched on to and landed one that was over 79″ but did not do girth measurment. We put a pic of her with her fish at Boarder Bait not sure if its still there but will try get it posted here if there is interest.

Congrats and a great angling accomplishment made even better by the fact that the fish was released.

There is every chance that this sturgeon was swimming in the Rainy River when the World War broke out. The FIRST World War. Think about that for a minute.

Isn’t it time to turn a new page over in the record books and start a “C&R State Record” category based on length, girth, and other measurements alone (not weight)?

An excellent idea. Why slaughter a 90 year old sturgeon or 55+ inch Muskie.

According to the DNR weight chart this fish weighed 96 lbs. It may have been in contention for the state record. The new state record does swim in the Rainy. Approximate age: 45 years. Hardly the 1st would war time frame.

We are ready to tie onto something like that. Got all next week to get it done. Very nice fish.
