I’ve had good luck with both the Rapala and Berkley brands. Foe fish under 10 Lbs. the rapela is better. For larger fish the Berkley is the better option. Being this is in the catfish forum I say the Berkley is the better option – Unless all you catch are small catfish
May 23, 2013 at 2:52 pm #1173016I’ve been using the Rapala 50 pounder for about 8 years now. I think I’m on my 4th.
One went over the side of the boat.
One just disappeared
and I have two now, one for spare.I use a cabela’s spring scale for fish over 50 pounds.
I did have a 110 pound scale I bought on line somewhere. It was less then $20., shipping was about the same.
Because of it’s small handle it was hard to use and I believe it lasted about a year, maybe two.
I was looking at Berkly’s. No experience with them though.
May 23, 2013 at 5:54 pm #1173097Hey Jesse, do you own a FishGrip? They make weighing cats a lot easier on both you and the fish IMHO!
May 23, 2013 at 6:25 pm #1173109If you want one to weigh over 50 Lbs. Try a bow scale. They work great.
May 24, 2013 at 12:36 am #1173165I’ve had two Berkleys and have had nothing but trouble with them The 100 lb one freezes up all the time and the 50 lb. one has just gone haywire. looks like hyeroglyphics on the screen. I have had two Rapala 50 pound scales and they always work but the battery cover comes off easy. That’s my only complaint with that one.
May 24, 2013 at 12:45 am #1173171I have had a berkley 50# for at least 7 or 8 years, since back when I used to wade the creeks for smallmouth. I went to use it the other day and the batteries were dead. $4.95 for energizers at walmart today, back to good as new. I’ve checked it with check weights and it is dead on.
I also have a cheap blue luggage scale that I bought off ebay straight from hong kong for $3.00. It goes to 20# I think. I keep it in my pocket when I am fly fishing or just beating the banks for bass since it is nice and small. It is within 0.03# which is fine for me.

I’ll try that Brian. ThanksMay 24, 2013 at 11:16 am #1173235Didn’t you weigh about 7000 pound worth of channel cats last year? How many hand held scales weigh that much fish in a lifetime. I’d say you might have just wore them Berkley’s out.
I have both a Berkley and a Rapala (50 pounders)and they both seem to work OK…but then, I haven’t weighed 7000 pounds of fish in mine…yet!!! Either seem to be a good choice.

Accurate within a 1/2 oz?
May 24, 2013 at 1:36 pm #1173280Yup. I’m not weighing state record fish…. Just want to see if I break the 4lb mark on bass.
December 17, 2013 at 12:49 pm #1372039I went to Quarro from Bottom Dwellers. They are $20 and run on AAA batteries.
