Red and white 1 ounce daredevils have caught more big northerns for me than anything else, anywhere.

I agree with Chris about looking for the bigger fish around bay entrances, wind blown points etc that have some cover nearby. Seems like the big ones hang in the deep water and ambush food a lot. We’ve caught a lot of nice fish in these areas pretty much anytime of year. Seems like I catch more big pike on Rainy fishing for smallies than I do fishing for Pike…………

That’s an awesome time of year to be there!

1.Bring a lot of boat gas with you, you’ll save money
2.always try and moor your boat out of the weather, wind sucks, mooring ropes break, and boats escape, trust me, I know.
    3. If you plan to venture real far to the east, make sure you have plenty of groceries and whatever else, once you get into the park theres nothing, and it can be a long trip to the store depending upon what you have for a boat motor.
    4. Don’t use the site on the Saginaw side of the Kempton channel, it’s a wind trap!

    Sounds good, thanks.

For the eyes, I planned to try the deeper parts of the shallow bays and the areas just outside of those bays, sound like it might work?

25 miles by road, it would be east of Manitou rapids, I believe, so prolly no boating in.

That’s kind of why I was asking.

(still gonna buy the thing though!!)

Trout in the Rainy would be news to me. ??

That must have been a rumor. Someone at a resort up there told us they were in the river and the lake. We never actually fished for them.

The houseboats are a blast, there’s some work involved, but well worth it. Some advice, when picking out your mooring spots, take the coming weather into consideration. If there’s gonna be heavy north winds, hook up on the south side of an island or in a bay protected from the north. Try and bring enough two cycle/boat gas with you so you don’t have to buy it from the place you get your boat, they’ll rape you on the cost. Also, make sure and bring more than enough beer, groceries and supplies, once you get into the park, there’s nothing, and it can be a long trip back. Lastly, theres a couple mooring sites at the mouths of channels and they are a hazard, they shouldn’t even be there. We hooked up at one near Blueberry island the last time we were there (I can’t think of the name of that channel, Kempton I think). Anyway, it got a little windy and the channel acted as a funnel causing one of the hooks to break off the bank. Our boat washed up against the bank sideways and we had a hell of a time getting it out of there without damaging anything.

What the heck is “SHO TIME”?

Thanks, this’ll be my 4th houseboat trip, they’re always fun.

There’s supposed to be trout in the Rainy River, so wouldn’t they have to be in the lake?

We’ll either be coming up highway 63, and are all clear. I checked with the MN road conditions website, and the resort, no closures.

Thanks though, it does look like there are a lot of weather related problems in MN right now.

Dean, we’ll be mostly fishing the lake I think, thanks for the advice.

I’m an Iowa resident, and am staying on the MN side of the river, ad fishing with an MN license. Where the heck does that leave me!?

That’s how I read it as well. This is my first time on Pool 4, so I just want to be sure on all the regs.

    Thanks!
