2005 Ford Explorer with 200k miles; how much longer?

I just passed 200,000 miles on my 2005 Ford Explorer and when I look at replacing it I get “sticker shocked” to say the least. I bought this new and have taken good care of it (or I think I have).

My question is do you guys think I can get another 35,000 to 40,000 miles (2 years) out of it? I had to replace the tranny at 135K so that should last and it has the 4.6L V8 engine that doesn’t leak a drop of oil and only burns about a half a quart every 3,000 miles or so. Other than a little rust on the rear quarter panels it still looks pretty good for a 12 yo vehicle. No funny noises, no goofy rattles, no check engine lights, and everything works like it should.

Has anybody had any experience with that generation Explorer or that 4.6L V8 engine? I wonder how many more miles I can get before it nickel and dimes me too much.

What would your payment be on a new vehicle? I would start putting away a couple hundred a month if possible and drive it until it dies or becomes unsafe. Being 12 years old it has little resale or trade in value. The value lies in that you aren’t making payments on it. Don’t worry about it, just drive it.

Sounds like its ready for another 100K! WIth no problems like Dutch says start putting away for a new or newer one and run till it dies. At that age and miles the worth of the vehicle is about down to nothing compared to new.

Yep I had a 2003 rwd explorer that went 250k. I sold it to a friend who still has it. Well maintained they last a really long time.

I’d keep driving it as well. Echoing the above, the re-sale is gonna be brutal, it’s certainly worth more to you on the road.

My tow vehicle is a 2000 Explorer. I bought it 2 years ago with only 80,000 miles on it. Blue Book Private party value was $2.5k and I didn’t even pay that for it.

My nephew has a 2005 f150 with the 4.6 v-8 that has been well maintained and he is the 2nd owner with 295,000 miles on it and it runs excellent yet.

Keep driving it till it dies. No sense in going out and buying a new vehicle in preparation for what this vehicle MIGHT do. With an older high mileage vehicle you cant predict anything. It could go another 2 years without a single issue or it could break tomorrow.

My daily driver has 253,xxx in case you were wondering grin
