I stayed there in June and September last year. The cabins are the nicest I have stayed in at a fishing resort. My wife was very happy with the accommodations. No TV in the cabin, but there is a large common room with Wifi and a TV. They have a nice protected dock area now so there were no lifts to deal with. You get your bait right there, and there is a decent bar/restaurant on the property next door. I’d definitely stay there if fishing Kab again.

Agree on Large based on your specs. I’m a little smaller at 6 ft and 175 lb, and wear similar layers. I went with a Large coat and Medium bibs as the Large bibs were a little too roomy.

I’d be careful with your post. MN regulations for LOTW clearly state only one walleye over 28 inches total length may be possessed.

Has anyone tried to put one of these in an Otter rod case? They look to be wider than the 6061 Black Betty, and there are no dimensions on the 13fishing website.

I also went with the Cold Snap blade cover for my 8 inch Nils and would recommend it. Very easy to use, and stayed on during a lot of bumpy snowmobile riding.

Also ordered the Cold Snap cover for a 8 inch Lazer. It turns out the same cover fits both augers.

Good point on the extra length of the auger. Came in handy this past weekend when there was a foot of snow on top of the 2 feet of ice.

I’ve heard someone else mention placing a shim in the coupler to deal with the wobble. How thick of a shim did you use? I’m wondering if a small aluminum washer would do the trick.

Based on mostly positive reviews on-line, I bought the 8 inch power point auger from an on-line retailer last year. Lightweight and cuts holes fast. The Tanaka power head starts easily and should be last a lifetime. I have had 2 issues though.

    1. After cutting around 20 holes I had to send the cutting head in for sharpening. They guy who sharpened it said it looked like I dulled it on some dirty ice from sand or debris. I don’t fish on a lake that has much of any sand.

    2. There is a significant wobble to the auger between the power head and drill. Nils sent me a new drill and a new adapter. I still has more wobble than any auger I have seen in person or on YouTube. Nils has basically told me they have replaced everything they can, and that I should take the power head to a Tanaka service center to get it checked out.

Aside from the issues that I hope to get resolved, I really like the auger. I am disappointed in the customer service from Nils, which I think is basically one guy out on the East coast. And the on-line retailer only had a 30-day return window.

My suggestion if you like the Nils, is to wait until next fall and buy it from a local retailer that will take care of you in case there are issues. Had I known StrikeMaster was coming out with a Honda-powered 4-stroke this season, I might have waited.

Thanks for posting the update. It was this weekend last year that they opened the snowmobile trail and I started fishing on Grindstone. Sounds like things are a little behind this year. I hope there is better ice by New Year’s weekend.

Thanks. It’s really tough to see anything on my 825c unless I’m in the flip-over. Hopefully the sun shade will help.

Where can you find this sun shade? I was just on the Marcum website and did not see it.

What you need is a camcorder that has an AV input. Most of the earlier posts here recommended the previous models of Aiptek cameras. About 6 months ago I got lucky and found one on clearance online (Aiptek HD-1 HD Camcorder iHD31K) for about $60. When I was looking, the current Aiptek models did not have the AV input. There are a few Aiptek cameras on Amazon, but you would have to do a little research to see if they have the input needed. Good luck with your search.

In 2009 I bought a 2005 Sportfish 1950 SST with 200 Optimax, similar trolling motor, full enclosure, rear bench seat, Lowrance with GPS and tandem Shorelandr roller trailer for $27k from a private party. That seemed a little high at the time, but there were only 18 hours on the motor and the boat was immaculate.

For comparison, the boat you are looking at is 4 years older at the time of purchase, motor is smaller, and had to be repainted suggesting it has seen a fair amount of use. I would agree with the other replies so far, and that $21k is too high. I’m curious to hear what others think, but I would guess it should sell for a few thousand less than they are asking.

I have a 2005 200 HP OptiMax used mostly for skiing and tubing. Last summer I went through 110-120 gallons of gas and used less than 2 gallons of oil. The real cost of operation is the gas.

Until the boss gives me permission to buy a snomobile or 4wheeler, I’m stuck pulling my Otter Cabin by hand. Once we had a little snow on the ice it became very hard to pull. I had to stop every few minutes, and I’m in reasonable shape. I opted to build a sled with some cheap downhill skis (15 dollars) and some scrap lumber after seeing the idea online. Put a little wax on the skis I can pull this easily with all my gear in it without stopping. Just another option to consider that costs very little.

$600 for a kicker, was that dismantled or just sprayed over the parts while assembled?

I don’t know how they were going to do it, but the motor was already mounted on the boat. I figured for $600 I could live with mismatched motors.

About 2 years ago I was quoted a price of $600 by the dealer to have my new T8 sent out to be painted black and new Yamaha decals placed. They said to do it before the motor was used due to concerns of oil and other contaminants leading to a less than perfect result. From what I understood, the entire motor would be painted black.

Thanks Russ. We used jigs very similar to that last time, with purple instead of pink. Sounds like Log Cabin Bait has everything one could need for a good fishing trip. Will plan to stop there on the way up.

Thanks for the advice guys. I’ll stick to the frozen shiners and put the $10 towards something else for the tackle box.

Harbor View is our favorite restaurant. Great atmosphere and everything is made from scratch. The sauteed chicken breasts in garlic-chipotle sauce and the halibut in caper sauce are their most popular dishes. It gets busy on weekends, but there is a bar there and next door to help pass the time. They don’t take credit cards or reservations, but it is definitely worth the drive and the wait.

We just had our A/C system checked a few weeks ago by the company that installed our furnace, A/C and air exchanger when we built the house 4 years ago. We were told we should be running the air exchanger 70% of the time when the weather is hot and humid like this. He said this would help the A/C run more effectively. Our humidity in the house hasn’t gotten much over 50% using this approach. I’m no expert, but I’d start running the air exchanger more and see if you can get the humidity down before adding additional mechanical equipment.

Had the boat out Thursday evening on Grindstone and water temp read 52 degrees. All day Friday and Saturday there were strong winds from the North with air temperature mostly in the 40s. Checked water temp from the dock one more time before I left today, 46 degrees. It really needs to warm up!

Thanks for the info on the Lowrance emulator. I had no idea this existed.

There are a few lakes in WI that I fish and was considering a LakeMaster Wisconsin chip, but have also been curious about the Contour Elite. Can you transfer lake maps from Contour Elite to a SD card and have all the information you need, or do you need the LakeMaster chip in your Lowrance as well?

I put this on one of my reels this spring thinking I’d be able to see it better above the water. In my opinion it is no more visible than a traditional clear monofilament line. It catches fish just fine though.

I searched for a long time for 6 Ga marine wire around here, but came up empty. Ultimately I bought some outdoor 6 Ga wire by the foot at Home Depot. As long as your wire and connectors are protected from the elements, I would think the outdoor wire would be fine. Gander Mountain carrys plenty of crimp-on connectors for hooking up 6 Ga wire to your battery.

I would vote for a 24 volt setup if you can fit the extra battery in. My previous boat was similar in size (Crestliner Fish Hawk 1650) and I put a 70 lb transom-mount on it. It could easily move the boat over 3 mph, which came in handy when fishing a reservoir where gas motors are not allowed, and when my main motor failed in the middle of Lake Vermillion just after dark.

There are plenty of guys out there that have had their Yami’s painted to match their big motors.

Thanks for all of the input. Can anyone tell me what kind of shop can do this kind of painting? Like an auto body shop or other… Even though I’m very handy, I would assume this might be better done by a professional, so it will withstand the water and sun exposure.
