I picked up an LX-5 this year. A buddy had an older Marcum, couldn’t fish next to any of us using newer units due to the interference. He bought a 5, now wishes he would have done it sooner.
Got friends who are Vex users, good units. They like them.
For me, the LX-5 is simple to use for this old man & my eyes prefer less bars of color .vs. the vex models.
I use the narrow beam, zoom & the SFL, most of the time.
The LX-6 & up models look good, I’m not a techie, just like the simplicity of the 5 & it works well for me.

Just curious how long those 2 ladies were.

Had the same problem but found if tilting it forward so the gas actually runs up against the unit it lights a whole lot easier.

Works. Had a friend that was so mad he was ready to throw his heater out his shelter. I made this suggestion, it fired up, he calmed down, life was good.
The Q-Tip cleaning is a good idea!

OK, thought maybe I’d learn a different technique.

Night Eyes… Noticed you have a single hook instead of a treble. In your experience, does this give you better hook ups? As has been previously discussed, I have gone up (1) size treble on all my Raps.

Have you tried the jigging Shad Raps as well? Some times the shad profile works well.

An independent wife that can handle her hubby going ice fishing while she is warm in the house is perfect. Maybe I should say for me…. it is perfect.

For Walleyes, I tend to like bigger hooks.
    I will go to #10 on 1/16 & #8 on the 1/8 Pro Series.
I’ve caught em on the smaller trebles, especially when they are aggressive. Just seems for me that I land more & lose less with the bigger hooks when they are hooked short.

The older I get, the more rules I make on all the variables, incl color.
The older I get, the more I realize I limit myself with my rules.
As mentioned, mix it up to see if something works today.

I am interested as well. I’ve seen a lot of cracked phone screens from hitting the ice. Realize I’ve got to be careful w/a GPS unit as well. Any brands that stand out to users, or brands to avoid? I fish some areas where cell service is spotty at best.

I must say when I started this thread I could not have imagined it would have been this entertaining. I was looking for opinions & have actually gotten a lot out of the dialog. I came across TFO rods in my searching for better quality ice rods & the Loomis connection caught my eye.
TUC rods certainly seem to be a favorite here & have my attention.

I have a vision issue, so I use colored line icing. Small barrel swivel to a floro leader. Use duolock snaps for spoons, Raps, etc. Does create 2 more knots, always a chance for failure. Direct tie to small jigs. Take my time in my shop, tie palomor knots. Haven’t had failure problems on the snaps or knots, always do a re-tie before next trip, carry extra rods when concerned about line fraying after playing fish, which eliminates trying to re tie on ice. Walleyes are my biggest quarry.

I also use Cabela’s live bait #12 swivels, small & short, yet hold up icing.
