I know a 6.25 largemouth was caught by boat in that area this weekend…..

On the river? There are virtually no Largemouth bass in this section do you have a pic?

From L&D #3 a while back. Dean Marshall won’t ever forget the look on their faces.

Kris Johnson, a deputy in the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Four Seasons Patrol as told in Oct 2009.

The story goes, as I recall it: a guy and his girlfriend were enjoying their personal watercraft (like jet skis) on the Mississippi River just above Lock and Dam #3 near Red Wing.

All of a sudden both crafts stopped working and the couple was caught in the current heading toward the dam. No one was around to help.

The guy caught one of the ropes hanging over the falls but his girlfriend didn’t. She disappeared and soon he was so exhausted from the push of the water against him that he let go and was swept over the dam.

This could have been the end of the story.

But in the river just below the dam were a group of fishermen. They saw the two watercraft explode out of the water and then saw the guy near by. They rescued him.

But there was no sight of the girl.

Unknown to anyone, she had gone over the dam but had gotten lodged under the falls in an air pocket! She was alive but no one knew it. And she couldn’t get word to anyone.

The roar of the falls around her was deafening.

It got to the point that she gave up any hope of surviving.

She just knew that she couldn’t stand the roaring sound any longer and so she slipped back into the falls to what she thought was certain death.

And this could have been the end of the story too.

But instead she came up in the same party of fishermen who had found her boyfriend!

This happy ending is not the usual result of these types of traumas on the river but sure is nice to hear.

A newspaper reporter that originally told me about this said he wanted to interview the girl a couple months after the incident. She wouldn’t talk about it.

Crazy! This was my friends cousin, he told me this story a couple times and always assumed he was exaggerating, I guess not…

Hey mike I thought I saw you on pool 2 the other day by 494, I am more concerned wheather the manitou access is a standard boat launch as it has a canoe symbol on the map I have… also if I can boat through the rapids or not.

I have seen guys fishing them at sunset in South St. Paul along the rocks across from the entrance to pigs eye/little pigs eye lake. Not much of a smally population compared to the river north of pool 2. There is also a youtube video if you can find it of some guys fishing the backwaters of pool 2 for largemouth but they were all small and you would probably need a boat to access that area.

Fishing was pretty decent at the dam Wednesday evening. Nice sized fish. Managed a 24, 25 and 26″er. along with several other walleyes.

That was Wednesday night. Water came up a good foot or more over night. Current seams moved all over the place. Lot of leaves and crud in the water. Got skunked tonight.

What were they biting on? If you dont mind me asking

and if your ever bored just go park down on blackdog and start reading a book… so many friendly guys down there.

That’s what Pug tells me. BTW, what book are you reading now Mike?

Yea last summer I periodically saw people sitting in their cars reading, didn’t think much of it… then I saw the same guy, 2 days in a row in the same spot, this was a little strange. A couple weeks later I saw a guy standing on the side of the road right by the RC boat racing pond in booty shorts with a book in his hand, just standing on the side of the road. I drove down there just to see if my buddy was catching anything and drove back thirty minutes later and he was still standing there. WTF I says, and I remember hearing about some sting operation down there… anybody know if there is a thread on that anywhere?

Sorry if spoiled your secret code brian or mike…

Shore fishing next to someone rather than alone is always cool, but boats drifting through your casting lane is bs.

Yea, I dont feel its worth getting into an argument over. I almost feel bad for them… It’s like if you really need to fish on top of me to catch a fish, go ahead, I have been pretty fortunate so far this year.

Thats is a good one though “Let me know when I can get back to fishing my spot”, we usually just keep casting our lanes and then they give us a dirty look when we cast 2 ft from there boat, its like seriously bro?

Post fish pic’s with backgrounds like that and you’ll see even more encroachment

I agree with Mike tho, you learn to downplay fish which can take some of the fun out of it. At the same time, the fun for me is gone when 10 boats / shore fisherman are bucking for the same spot…

    Good Luck

    I don’t think its much of a secret…

Some good suggestions but I think I am just going to bring my rape whistle down there start blowing it crazily and yell poachers while hurling boulders towards there boat, then if they come back I’ll repeatedly ask to fish in there boat with them… or is that poor fishing etiquette??? And don’t ask why I have a rape whistle.

I got him probably 2-3 weeks ago now, he had a 14″ inch girth, The other smaller one we got that day had a brass colored leader coming out of his mouth, we tried to get the hook out but it was no use…. I dont know who uses leaders fishing with something that a sturgeon might eat but who knows…. maybe it was a minnow that died or something.

Also went out in the boat saturday night 10/12 and got skunked on Sturgeon, got some other stuff but we couldnt really even fish the first half of the day due to the window so we hit Stillwater Harvest fest for a couple hours, then we fished the bridge, the power plant outlet and the 40ft hole right above the power plant outlet on the opposite side of the river (near the sand point) with no luck, had 2 bits at the power plant right when we got there but I was impatient and set the hook too early… headed out at 11pm there were about 4 other boats on the spot…

Also we put in downstream from the power plant at the beach house I think its called… and there were quite a few guys anchored up right down from there (down from the island point) is that a walleye spot or were they most likely fishing for Sturgeon?

Ok sorry guys I know I am little late on my update, but I have fished Stillwater on the 36 bridge the past 3 weekends about, first trip We got 1 large one (40″ inches) and 2 small ones (15″ appx) off the bridge (on worms/fatheads), second trip we got one big one on cut bait (44″ inches long 14″ girth cutbait was redhorse) off the rocks at the end of the bridge (upstream side), one big one fishing on the bridge and I lost a large one on the bridge (broke my 30lb braid at the last bridge abutment because I am a newb)

Also that second trip my friend from Wisconsin was fishing with live bluegills and had 2 bites that didn’t take, one was from a channel most likely (or maybe flat) as you could see the bruising… and the other was most likely a walleye as it ripped into its side pretty good… nothing on the cut bait this trip.

Third trip we got skunked, nothing but sheephead which we also got periodically on the other trips, its very annoying because the sheephead will steal your worms and I never knew if it was a sturgeon or sheephead shortbiting (I assume sheephead/drum)

Tuesday night 10/8/13 we hit the king power plant, there was plenty of shad jumping in the stream (warm water discharge) but no sturgeon just a bunch of sheephead, I dont think the water is deep enough there? Or the water isnt cold enough yet to draw them in?

All fishing was done from shore. But this weekend we will be taking out the boat to hit some deep holes…

Do you recommend circle hooks or J-hooks? if you use a jig do you just let it sit on the bottom? Thanks!

    I’ll be in a 16ft v-bottom with a 25hp on the back…

Is there a public landing at stillwater? Right by the 36 bridge or would boomsite or beanies be the only spot?

Excellent information, I appreciate it, I take it boomsite is a public landing?

Is there a public landing in stillwater, around the 36 bridge?

And I heard bluegill are live action legal to use in Wisconsin… instead of fatheads could I use a chunk of bluegill with nightcrawler for Stugeon? My buddy is from WI, I am from MN…

I fished the power plant years ago when I was a kid with my dad and did good for bass on Zara Spooks (topwater), How far of a drive south would it be to the power plant spot from Stillwater?

Also are the fish outta the st. croix (walleyes) edible? I live in St. Paul and wont eat anything from the Mississippi unless I am north of Monticello….

p.s. you guys are way more helpful than the guys at HSO
