I like Berkley big game too. I use the 25 pound test.

I had some luck last night. 10 or 15 with most coming in the early morning hours between 3 and 6 am. That storm coming in at 6 am looked pretty nasty! Probably shut things down even more..
Did I mention a few days (or should I say mornings) before it was more like 30-40 fish.. 3 or 4 over 50″ and one a little under 58″..
Cut Shad!
October 6, 2007 at 7:13 pm #614090Nice fish. Though the small ones can be annoying I’d gladly catch a bigger sheephead. I think they are surprising old fish too.
Actually, they (the small ones anyways) are pretty good eating too.

Channel cats roll most all the time..but I ‘spose they don’t have that shnooz to hook the line and start the wrap???
Yeah, I think it’s also because their mouth is so underneath their long nose instead of being in front of their head. So, each roll would start a wrap.
October 3, 2007 at 3:10 am #612933I think after sturgeon fishing so much this fall I’ve trained myself where I’ll be watching my rod tip even when I’m fishing with a bobber..
Actually I was just thinking about it and it seems most of my big fish come from the slightest bites. With the flathead.. yeah.. and that sturgeon last night I don’t even think I saw it move, just had a gut feeling!
October 3, 2007 at 1:52 am #612910I’ve only seen one with a lamprey on it. Should I have taken it off? My friend wanted to but I said “let nature take it’s course” but I suppose they’re exotic anyways. I was reading they can be so devastating under some conditions only one out of 7 fish attacked will survive. But that must not be the case with sturgeon..
October 2, 2007 at 10:12 pm #612824I agree with David Scott, a sturgeon can fight harder for the weight. To me there’s little doubt after my 38 pound sturgeon last night (wow..). I also like getting a tap and not knowing if the fish is there till you lift up on the pole.. But that may be just because it’s something different. The Mississippi at night is indeed charming. Also, the Minnesota during the day by Mankato that was always nice smooth water with no boat traffic. If not catching fish then for sure the Mississippi or Minnesota.. Also, catfishing is nice because you don’t have to watch your rod tip.. I can’t decide!
Say B Robinson, actually about a week ago on the Miss I caught 4 flatheads one day using cut shad, I was surprised too. And they were all nice size..
October 2, 2007 at 3:50 am #612544Mankato, on the Minnesota river. These sturgeon and the St. Croix though it’s like a whole different ball game. Even the catfish there.. Then tonight I caught another PB 55 3/4″ sturgeon. If I have to pull one more anchor up while trying to keep the fish from pulling me in…
Thanks for the tips Brian!
October 1, 2007 at 8:06 pm #612448Haha just kidding.. There’s some good info here. Actually I’ve been catfishing for 5 years, just not in this neck of the woods. Yeah, and this is my biggest.. and 3 over 40 this year, thanks to the good info here.
October 1, 2007 at 6:06 pm #612427Un-real, you know it’s a big fish when it takes two people to hold it.
October 1, 2007 at 2:38 am #612248Hey Steve, the place I was fishing (and my first time there) was muddy bottom about 25 foot deep. It was close to shore after the drop off. Probably about 10 feet after it went from sandy/rocky to muddy. I didn’t fish there after I caught the fish, it was quite the ordeal.. but I’ll let you know if I catch any more there and the exact spot if I do. There’s something going on if the first flathead I caught is 50+ pounds.. must be some real giants in there. You’re right, it was lake St. Croix.
October 1, 2007 at 1:54 am #612220I agree. There’s another thread on the Mississippi catfish forum that’s kind of related in case you guys haven’t seen it.
October 1, 2007 at 1:10 am #612202Yeah, I just had the camera on the front of the boat and used the delay. Should have got a pic of the look on my face when I first saw this thing coming up from the depths, seriously man.. It still kinda makes me laugh looking at the mouth shot.
September 30, 2007 at 6:40 pm #612143Those goliaths look like fun. Check this one out too..

In one of the latest videos he said they’re no longer allowed to even take them out of the water.September 30, 2007 at 6:23 pm #612139That’s a good question mplspug. In my pics from last night I noticed I had one hand by the tail and the other more up in front. I don’t know what way is better to hold it. I know I would have put both hands in the mouth and suspended it if I didn’t read this thread..
Also the duck decoy bag seemed to help. I left it in there to recover for awhile after the fight. Then, when I went to revive it instead it just gave me a kick and was off. I remember in the past having to revive 40 pound flatheads and this 52 pounder didn’t even require it. Must be doing something right!
September 30, 2007 at 6:12 pm #612137The last two nights.. my PB sturgeon 52″ (and one that was 51″) and now my PB flathead. I kinda like this fall fishing on the Croix!
September 30, 2007 at 6:06 pm #612135Yeah, my first St. Croix flathead. The first time I went out there earlier this year for catfish I was unimpressed. No log jams, clear water.. I mean why would I fish my usual 5 feet of water when I can clearly see there’s no fish down there! Maybe some different tactics.. or a lot of patience? I think I remember someone posting they fished the Croix 24 nights w/o catching even one flathead. Then, a 55 pounder..
September 30, 2007 at 7:02 am #612063Yeah, good god even the flatheads are 50″ there! (Well, to be honest it was 49″..)
September 29, 2007 at 7:35 pm #612014Hey Brian, like this? Also another thing I’ll do almost as a gut reaction to a nice fish: After getting the hook out I wet my duck decoy bag, put the fish in there, and get it back in the water in about a minute flat! That way I can catch my breath, get the camera and/or scale ready, and it’s a nice way to weight the fish (when it’s in the bag). Always had a lively fish after doing this.
September 29, 2007 at 6:55 pm #612010My biggest so far.. 52″
I have to say this sturgeon fishing is the the most fun I’ve had fishing…
This was last night (12pm/30FOW/shad).. and had another one a little later at 51″.
September 25, 2007 at 5:15 pm #610975I went out the other day to catch some Channels. I set up on the tail end of a deeper hole I suppose I was fishing in 15′ of water. Ended up getting a nice 37″ flathead right off the bat. Thought maybe I’ll switch to a bigger hook (was using 3/0 and cut shad) but then figured it was a fluke. Well, to make a long story short ended up catching 4 nice flatheads there during the day off of cut shad(didn’t have any live bait to try). One of the strangest days fishing I’ve had this year. Yeah, no channels either…
September 5, 2007 at 3:11 pm #605764Actually we were out there at 3am too. Yeah, well basically most of the day!
August 30, 2007 at 1:26 am #604365Thanks for the seminar Brian! I think I’ll be out there at midnight on the 1st!
August 30, 2007 at 1:15 am #604363Always kinda liked this pic. I think it was 30″… I had one this spring, a personal best at 17 pounds 6 ounces!
