Co-worker lives near the lake. Was talking about open water in many places as of yesterday. Some pockets may have safe ice, some not safe, some are for boating right now.
Cool article in the star trib about all the birds congregating around the open water http://www.startribune.com/variety/blogs/Wingnut/
January 1, 2016 at 3:31 pm #1588957there is walkable has been walkable ice on Tonka for a week if you know where to find it
February 1, 2016 at 11:15 am #1597035Plenty of ice on Tonka right now, looking at 12-18 inches (as of today) in most bays. Here is a report from TonkaFishing’s Facebook page dated January 23rd:
Seaton Lake: Ice thickness this morning was roughly 11+ inches in the middle of the lake.
Black Lake: Popular with many anglers because of it’s easy access from the road, Black Lake now has SUV Traffic, Wheelers and Snowmobiles. Ice thickness this morning was 12+ inches.
Spring Park Bay: A plowed road exists from Phelps Island access to Goose Island area. Vehicle traffic and wheel houses are now on Spring Park Bay where Ice thickness this morning was 12+ inches. Please note that no vehicles are currently traveling from the Sheriff Station Access, all vehicle traffic is coming from Phelps Island.
Cooks Bay: Ice thickness this morning was roughly 11+ inches between 100-200 yards off shore. Five wheel houses are now on Cooks Bay, they are pulling houses out with 4 Wheelers Only.
North Arm: Mike J. reporting 13 inches of ice two days ago.
Crystal Bay: Dave B. reporting 10-12 inches of ice on Crystal Bay.
Snowmobile Traffic has been steady across the lake, Channels are firm but wet. Be careful and trust the THIN ICE signs. Proceed with caution.
Be Safe and Have Fun!
