The MN House has introduced HF 944 to ban jigs and sinkers less than one ounce, or smaller than 2 1/2 inches in length if they are made of lead. Tungsten might be popular for ice but I don’t think we have nearly enough resources to replace lead jigs yet. Its proposed to take effect in 2025. Guess I will need some advice on how to make my own lead sinkers and jigs.

Stock up now!
It’s going to be like Minnesota’s own personalized version of the TP shortages…only with affordable jigs.
Imagine what a 3/4oz tungsten jig will cost when taking into account what some of the micro tungsten ice jigs cost…
January 27, 2023 at 1:34 pm #2176805I thought this was to ban the sale of led jigs and sinkers under 1 oz. If it is to take a fish using a lead jig I have more in stock than I can lose by then.
January 27, 2023 at 1:39 pm #2176808Subd. 2. Prohibition. A person may not use a sinker or jig to take fish if the sinker or

The length of a jig pretty vague, it doesn’t specify in the bill how it’s measured. It’s less than 1oz or under 2.5″ though so not sure it really matters.
January 27, 2023 at 2:04 pm #2176820I overread that OR
I don’t know why exactly but it messes with me a bit. “Lead can be used if it weighs more than 1oz and is longer than 2.5 inches” seems easier to parse for some reason.
January 27, 2023 at 2:05 pm #2176821If the 1/8 jigs I use for jigworming all have to become lead free, those days when the toothy snot rockets are active are going to get costly. I played around with the AFW 7×7 Micro supreme leader material a little last season. May have to do a little more experimenting with it again this season.
January 27, 2023 at 2:14 pm #2176825Guessing the size has to do with the scientific research they have done on the size of jigs a loon can swallow.
January 27, 2023 at 2:22 pm #2176833Well if this passes the DNR won’t be asking for higher fees for a while. Just think of all the tickets people will be getting for fishing with a hook, split shot, and bobber.
Tungsten split shot is $6.50 for a 12 pack.

January 27, 2023 at 2:34 pm #2176844Well if this passes
I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see any bill that is proposed, and makes it to the floor, not passing this session. “era of gridlock is over!”

Yeah that’s what i’m worried about too. Sometimes teamwork doesn’t make my dream work. Hoping that corporate and small scale vendors get involved and start making calls that might make a difference.
January 27, 2023 at 3:29 pm #2176878January 27, 2023 at 3:35 pm #2176881I won’t be throwing away my collection of jigs. Write me a ticket. It’ll be cheaper that way

Yep looks like I thought he would.
January 27, 2023 at 3:52 pm #2176893If they want to start a buy back program I guess I am good with that but if not he can go [email protected]#% himself. Really can’t see that passing but there have been dumber laws on the book.
January 27, 2023 at 4:10 pm #2176898The cost to manufacturers, retailers and fishermen will be extraordinary. To the point where it may be more cost effective to phase this in over a much longer period, while having manufacturers invest some money into Loon production efforts. This would soften the blow to the manufacturers, retailers and fishermen while making improvements to assist the current and future Loon population and reproduction.
I would agree that it would be cheaper to pay a fine than to throw away or get a small percentage of what I have invested in jigs in the last 40 years.January 27, 2023 at 4:13 pm #2176900If this bill passes and you need to sell your jig heads, PM me and let me know what you got and what you want for them. I hope this nonsense doesn’t spread to Iowa.
What would we do without idiot politicians. Next thing you’ll be shooting cooper bullets.
January 27, 2023 at 4:14 pm #2176902Curious, but how would a CO be able to tell the difference between leaded and non-leaded jigs and sinkers, especially open water?

Weight it then dunk it in water and get volume. Should be fairly easy to identify material with that info.
January 27, 2023 at 4:28 pm #2176906I have plenty of molds and maybe a couple thousand hooks. I’d be more than happy to do a buy back. I’ll just keep casting and swapping.
