Interested to know if anybody is using an disk harrow pulled by an ATV for food plot tillage?

Looking at the King Kutter and others like this:

Do you find that you need to add weight to get them to “bite”?

I notice a lot of the smaller single gang units, guys have added racks to carry cement blocks. I’m wondering if the bigger box-frame units carry enough weight on their own to dig better?

Also, anybody looked at the “generic” brands from Tractor Supply, etc vs the King Kutter and other brand names? They all look very similar, are they?

My uncle had borrowed a real nice one from someone. Cant remember the name but it had a box frame. 2 gangs. And it didnt do anything on virgin ground.

On a previous worked field it did alright.

I saw on youtube someone had made a spring tooth harrow type deal with what looked like an old cultivator and some springs. It looked like it was breaking ground pretty good.

I use the King Kutter. You will need to add weight, we add at least 200lbs of steel plates in a box mounted to the top. On virgin ground you will want to work it when it is moist. It also cuts much better when turning. It will give your atv a workout. I have a 500 Honda Foreman and it will get hot on warmer days. It works fine on ground that has already been broken. Hope this helps!

Agree I’ve used mine for about 4 yrs and one thing to add is get rid as much grass or weeds as possible. Moisture is the key to using these disc.

I used a ATV pulled disc for many years before getting a tractor. Virgin ground takes quite a few passes to get worked up even with added weight, BUT it does work, just takes more time. It does work the ATV pretty hard, so make sure and give your rig time to rest. Once ground is worked up the following years it’s pretty easy.

I broke the majority of my plots with an ATV pulled disc, time consuming, but well worth the time and effort. I still use the disc at home for those plots. Mine is a single gang one bought at fleet farm.

    I appreciate all the replies.

One last quick question: Is this going to be really tough on an ATV? I’m looking at mostly Polaris sportsman units between 500 and 700. I would hope that with belt drive, the belt might take a beating, but is this going to burn up the tranny or be excessively hard on drive or suspension joints, etc?

From these comments and ones I found on other sites, it seems like the big things are that the units need weight and that moisture in the ground is a practical necessity.

I found quite a few posts saying that when it’s wet they pre-work ground even if they don’t intend to plant right away, just to take advantage of the moisture.

I think I’ll try one of these if it doesn’t tear up ATVs too bad. . I’m not going to have so much plot that I have any real need for speed. Plus, I’ve got a ROF (retired old fart) that needs something to keep him out of the casinos and coffee shops, so problem solved.

It’s a lot of work on the machine, but nothing they can’t handle. Just give it a break now and then so it doesn’t overheat.

We have the same problem with our little 45hp tractor and disc. We simply disc during the cooler periods of the day and keep an eye on the temp gauge. Run the machine sensibly and you shouldn’t have any issues.

I don’t know. I’ll have to measure in March when I’m home. We went from the 3 point style, which worked great, but took forever to disc 20 acres of food plots. Now we have the pull behind. This spring, I’m gonna pull a few discs off the out side to see if less drag helps. I really think it’s just a weight issue overall. We pay close attention to the depth we run it at.
