I run an alumacraft Lunker, slightly loaded down. I have a 50 horse Yamaha four stroke. The motor is in great shape, but I can not get over 32 mph with just me in the boat. Shouldn’t that boat do more like 38 to 40 miles per hour? I am proped correctly at 5500rpm WOT. I look forward to any suggestions.

I wouldn’t think so, My lund rebel 1650 console with a 40 horse, loaded lightly may hit 30 mph on a very good day. 32 sounds about right to me.

my 17 ft Fishawk does 43 MPH with a 90 hp 2 stroke Merc.
40 mph seems like an unrealistic number for you.

    I’d say 32mph is pretty good for a 50-horse.

I run a 16′ Dominator with a 50 and get about the same. I think that is about all you will get.

I’ll agree, you are pretty close to max speed. Do you have tilt and trim on that motor?

They beefed up the newer Lunkers a few years back and added a lot of weight. Especially to the front end with the storage and decking. And the 50 4-stroke is heavier than the 50 2-stroke, so more weight overall. I had a 91 Lunker that did about 30-32 with a 40hp 2-stroker. Seemed pleanty fast for that boat.

I had a F50 on a Crestliner Superhawk 1600 and never got past 28mph so your speed sounds right. Good motor but no speed demon.

I appreciate the info. I figured it should go faster, some 40 horse boats go close to the same as my 50. Anyway, thanks for the info.

I run a 2000 Lunker 16 tiller with a 2-stroke 50hp Merc, aluminum prop & a 9 gallon gas tank, 2 batteries and lots of gear. My max speed is 34.9 mph. 10hp doesn’t make much difference.

I had an older (1978) Mirro-Craft “Mister Musky” with a 50hp Merc….28mph was it. That is what the speedo said so who knows what it was running! If you’re going off you speedo, you may be going +/- 3-4 mph. My Ranger speedo at 30 mph (GPS) is right at 30 but at 60 GPS, it reads 62. 30 mph with a tiller is running PLENTY fast! OH ya, I want to add one other thing…my buddy ran the exact same boat with a 55 Johnson…it ran MUCH faster than my Merc! It just wouldn’t troll down as smooth as the black box. Andy
