Do walleye or sauger on the St Croix ever suspend over some of the basin areas during later summer? I just spent a weekend fishing suspended walleye on Lake of the Woods over the main basin in 30′-35′ of water, and we did quite well. So I guess I’m curious if the fish are present in a similarly here, or if they stay more oriented to structure. Thanks!

Got the kiddo out for a few hours on the river today. Unfortunately the fish didn’t cooperate, but we did manage one nice 17″ walleye on a jig and minnow. Fresh fish appetizer for the family tonight!

Was out today caught 2 15” smb on #7 flicker shad. Several short eyes and lost what looked to be 17” at the boat. Also got a carp on a shiver minnow, that was a good fight. Most fish came on lead core. Does any one know what the smaller fish is?

It looks like some type of logperch.

I’m heading down to Red Wing this weekend with a couple of buddies for our first real effort at finding some walleye/sauger/crappie on P4. Does anyone have any thoughts on what all the rain in the last few days will do to the fishing? And any suggestions on where to target them with the current conditions? Thanks!

Thanks for the information! Out of curiosity (this is probably a dumb question), are you finding saugers in the same areas that the walleye are in, or are they targeted differently? I’m newer to river fishing, and slowly trying to put all of the pieces together!

I’m newer to fishing the St. Croix and have figured out some access points for open water fishing, but where are people accessing the river in the Bayport area in winter? I’m interested in both walk on and drive on (once ice is thick enough) locations. Thanks for any help!
