I often thought if you wanted to target bigger <em class=”ido-tag-em”>walleyes on the river fishing them like catfish might be the way to go. Bigger live bait. Closer to logs and structures. At night. Heavier gear to get them out of the structure. I’ve spent enough time out there to believe those larger fish just don’t get to excited about small jigs and walleye sized crankbaits fished in typical walleye spots.

    Perfect 10’s and F18 rapalas! Also 10” bullheads…

Back when I catfished the Minnesota we got big eyes on bullheads.

Man, how far apart were those fish caught?! That’s wild.

Those two were a double. I can’t remember for sure the exact numbers from that night but we had a LOT of fish from 28-31”. Possibly the best night of truly big walleye catching ever.

I have 5 over 54” with a 55” being the biggest. All from the metro. Muskie fishing use to consume my ever waking moment but since I became a father I only fish Muskies a few times a year now. Times have sure changed.

The good news of the day was you found Thorne Brothers and their staff. The store is a Muskie guys dream.

The bad news of the day…..it would have been cheaper to make friends with the neighborhood crack dealer. jester jester

Start Muskie fishing and you won’t be able to afford drugs!
I have 3 predators and 3 legend tournaments. The predators are always my favorite.

    Any luck?

I’m still mourning my broke 610mxf. Fall is upon us, and I need it back bawling bawling bawling

    @Timschmitz

I found a 6’10” mlxf and a 6’8”mxf with about 2” off the tips. Still awesome rods! I will seriously trade a 6’9”mlxf legend extreme for a good condition rage spinning rod!!

Schroeder has been around for a while, I think he mostly trolls, not sure if he has upped his casting game at all recently, good time of year to go. He stays busy, so must keep customers happy.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Greg troll for Muskies on waconia or Minnetonka. He’s a pike trolling machine from may – June.

A torch and butter knife have saves countless rubber baits for me. One particular mammoth curly sue had over a dozen 50” plus fish to its credit before finally being retired. At the end it was more melted plastic than bait.

Which brands and models would you recommend then for a rod and reel?

If you want one really nice Muskie rod that will cover pounders to cowgirl/supermodels and you’re willing to spend some money order a 9’8” XH predator from Thorne bros and pair it with a shimano tranx or Calcutta 400d. That is the absolute best combo money can buy.

If you want to save a few bucks look at the st Croix mojo series Muskie rods but still pair it with the tranx or Calcutta reel.

That 6’ rod will make a great walk the dog style bait rod but a absolutely awful buck tail rod. With today’s technology and huge baits like cowgirls and supermodels buck tail rods start at 8’6”. My personal Muskie setups range from 8’6” to 9’8” the longer your rods the less you bend over figured 8ing making it far more enjoyable to fish long periods of time. Thorne bros is still king as far as custom Muskie rods go.

I’m enjoying watching this but also extremely frustrated that these guys can’t catch a fish today! I’d really like to put the boat in Saturday to see if it’s actually as slow as it looks.

My rage 610mxf I got free from a rod deal with gander mtn st.croix offer years ago. Best dam rod I own by far.

I will cry when it breaks, and that’s not exaggerating.

I have a 6’10”mlxf spinning and it’s a nicer rod than my legend extremes!
The 7’1”mxf casting rod is about the finest jerk bait rod ever made also!

Teach a kid to fish…and they won’t have money to buy drugs lol

To quote my 4.5 year old son at scheels Sunday. “Dad we have a lot of crank baits but we should get some more”

I apparently haven’t figured out the crankbait thing. I have 4 or 5, and only managed to catch a few stray smallies and pike with them. Never caught a walleye doah

I catch a lot of walleyes on cranks but at this point it’s more of an addiction than anything. I’m sure if I liked bobbers as much as cranks I’d have thousands of those as well. There’s just so many pretty colors.

2 of every color and size and style of crank bait ever made. 20 of every size and color jig. 3-5 packs of every size and style hook. About 30 pounds of lead and tungsten weights. 600 bags of plastic. 1500 yard spools of 6lb 20lb and 100lb suffix braid 300yd spools of 4lb 8lb 17lb and 30lb fluorocarbon. 26 top water frogs and around 100 various bass jigs. That should be a good start. Just remember to put a rider on your boat policy that covers lost or stolen gear! ASK ME HOW I KNOW!

All I know is that I’ve been doing it before I have memory of it. I’m trying to do the same for my sons.

Find one that comes stock with more than 1 high capacity clip. Some come with 3-5 clips…
Finding and buying clips 1 year from now might be difficult.

What the hell is a clip?

Depending on if you’re looking for risto raps in 5’s 7’s or 9’s the dt series rapalas come close to matching them. The Risto’s were my favorite river walleye crank! Unfortunately the two full 3700 boxes that I had blew out of my boat on 494! Saddest day ever.

We 5th wheeled it until insurance totaled the camper because the roof ripped in a storm. We made it almost every weekend last summer. Sometimes with the Warrior and sometimes without. My sons loved it and I’m sad we won’t get to have that freedom this summer. When life settles down the boys will have a 5th wheel again.

Minnesota doesn’t allow for double you daily for possession.

    From the MN DNR website:

The new regulations only modify daily limits on the affected waterbodies. Anglers can only keep the prescribed number of fish per day from the water but can return the next day for another limit as long as they don’t exceed the statewide inland water possession limit of 20 sunfish per angler.

    https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/news/2021/03/02/new-sunfish-regulations-effect-nearly-100-waters

Wow I’m absolutely wrong! Thanks for the clarification!

You can still have 20 in possession so go out two days and you have your meal.

Some lakes can easily handle a possession limit of 6 walleyes

I’d like a list of the non stocked natural breeding walleye lakes in Minnesota that can handle a 6 walleye limit.

Border waters are a different scenario.

I can think of 2 within 40 minutes of downtown Minneapolis.
