Congrats to Spencer. What a joy it is to give boys a love for fishing. I just took my 5 year old boy on a camping/fishing trip a few weekends ago and he caught his first bass by himself on a frog pulling it over the slop. I had greater joy seeing the smile on his face than any of the times I’ve caught one myself. Thanks for sharing!

September 1, 2010 at 12:29 pm #896840We vacation up to that area once per year so I don’t get out there too much, but I’ve done pretty well on the smaller lakes connected to Whitefish for Bass. On Middle Whitefish just before Upper on the south side of the lake is Bertha Lake. Try the south end of the lake…there is nice structure and a nice deep weedline to find….jig worms or texas rigged worms worked well here. Also on Bertha the NW corner of the lake I did well throwing a medium running crankbait into the shallow and running it into the deep over the weedline. Get a crank that will run just over the top of the weeds – caught a bunch of bass and a few small northerns doing this. Rutger’s Bay is another small lake on the south side of Middle Whitefish and has good weedlines on the entire south and east sides of the lake…same tactics here. These are also nice to fish because they are a bit smaller and easier to control the boat if there is any wind. Have fun, beautiful country up there!
July 12, 2010 at 7:30 pm #886171I have a very similar boat to you…..14 ft deep V Lund rated up to 35 horse. I have a 25hp Mercury outboard and it is plenty for me. I’m sure you can get a few extra mph out of a 30 or 35, but it wasn’t worth the extra cost for me. You can’t go wrong either way, but a 25hp will move that boat just fine!
July 6, 2010 at 6:51 pm #884758Any recommendation on jig presentation and size? I usually use 3/4 oz. when fishing deeper weedlines with heavy cover, but am not sure how heavy the cover is on this lake. Also do you typically use a jig ‘n pig set up (with craw plastic) or what works well jigging?
