Howa makes (or at least they used to) a 2 in 1 rifle. It comes with both a youth and adult stock. You could also look into a standard Remington 700, then just buy a youth stock for around $70….use the youth stock now and you’ll still have the standard stock when they grow into it.

Edit: sorry, I missed that you said you need a left handed gun. I don’t believe they make the 700 in left handed models.

I use the Quaker Boy call.

It has worked well for me, as I’ve had several birds shock gobble in response. The only drawback I’ve found (if you can call it that), is that I have to blow fairly hard to get the volume I’m looking for. Super easy to use, and the price was right…I think I paid about $8.00.

He’s shooting a 12 gauge Beretta 1201F, 3″. I’ve always shot 5’s, so I’ll probably set him up with the same.

Fished out there on Wednesday for the first time. Fished NE of the landing off the point with the crowd. Crappies were about 2 feet off the bottom in 20 feet of water. An hour before & after sunset we pulled about ten between 10″ & 12″. Good luck!

Team 2 is on the board. Passed a lot of deer while sitting with the bow, but last weekend for the rifle opener, they weren’t so lucky. One doe taken at 8:30 Saturday morning, the other was taken at 4:00 Saturday afternoon.

The farm in this story is about 5 miles down the road from our hunting property. Sure wish I would have drawn a tag this year…

I have an M2000 and love it. I shot on a trap league for a few years, as well as pheasant and grouse trips each year, and have had very few issues with it. I will say though, I do have to clean the gun regularly. If I went a few weeks of league without cleaning it, I’d have the occasional cycling issue. Also last year I took it in because it was striking the primers pretty lightly…an easy $25 fix. It’s definitely not a benelli or beretta, but a good reliable gun for the price.

I have the 4.0 and love it. Wore it the other weekend when it was about 20 degrees in the morning & 50 in the afternoon. Just wore it under my early season camo. Actually broke a little sweat on the walk in. It wicked away the moisture great, never got cold, and surprisingly didn’t overheat in the afternoon like I thought I would. Worth the price, which is steep, at about $150.

Wow! That buck looks like he has the same genes as another buck who was made famous on this site…

Had a small fork horn walk under the stand, and two nice does that never got within about 60 yards. Back at em in the morning…

Settled in on the edge of the hay field. Lots of good does on the card from the past couple evenings. Here’s hoping one slips up. Good luck to all who are out tonight!

It was a pretty uneventful first ever hunt for me this morning. Got a few responses to the mouth call shortly after fly down…then absolutely nothing. Still nice to know there are some birds around though. Going mobile this afternoon & hoping for a little more action. Good luck to everyone who’s out there this weekend!

First, thanks to everyone for jumping in. I need to admit that I’m a total rookie, having only ever heard a “live” turkey yelp once or twice. So I’m judging my calls based on the recordings I downloaded.
I picked up a 3 pack of of the Quaker Boy foam calls, mostly using the Ol’ Boss Hen (sounds better/more raspy than the others), but I’m have the same trouble with all 3 calls. I’m sure my issues have more to do with my technique rather than the call. Again, being a total rookie, I don’t know exactly how to describe it…other than the calls I’m making sound flat, or monotone.

My last one was almost two months ago. Not gonna lie, I still want one once in a while….but it is a lot easier than it was in the beginning. I used the nicorette gum the first few weeks and it made it bearable. Good luck!

I have a cheap little Remington 597 with a Weaver 4x scope and love it. I bought it at Fleet Farm a few years back for around a $100. Lots and lots of rounds through it with no problems.

My dog got it a couple years ago. She never showed any symptoms (and still doesn’t), but the vet said she would probably test positive for a few years, even after he put her on the pills. I think the pills lasted about a month. During about the second week she got a blotchy rash on the insides or her hind legs. Called the vet and he told me to give her half a benedryl…. The benedryl made her sluggish, but after a couple days the rash was gone and she was bouncing off the walls.
I would still say to call your vet, but the benedryl worked for me.

I know I’m jumping in on this one a little late from when you first posted…but I had the same symptoms on my 06 Honda Rincon. Had been running it around in the snow, and figured that screwed something up. Ended up going through everything I knew how to (air filter, bad gas, etc.). Ended up taking it into the shop, and the mechanic about laughed at me and had it fixed in under 10 minutes….it was a simple carb adjustment. I know very little about Polaris ATV’s, but based on my experience, the carb would be my guess.

I look forward to seeing those same deer everyday on my commute as well. I go to work a little later, so I don’t see them in the morning very often. But when I drive home around 6:00pm, they’re always there. The first time I saw them, I only saw the fawn…so I figured it was just young and dumb. But now I’ve been seeing the whole group. I can’t believe they spend that much time that close to the freeway and one hasn’t gotten smeared yet. Amazing animals, and something to look forward to on the drive.

I’ve actually emailed the DNR the last two years to see if they were going to open it up. Every year when hanging/checking deer stands….the birds are everywhere. And this year while sitting in various rifle stands, I saw probably 20 to 30 birds (some could have been the same birds). I’m excited to hunt on our own land, and after messing around the last couple years I may have a little pattern figured out.

The DNR finally opened up an area to hunt turkeys where we own land this year. Granted, there’s only 5 licenses available, but I’d like to get in on the lottery and start building some preference points. I tried to buy the license on the DNR’s website….but once I got all signed in under the “purchase licenses” section, the Spring Turkey application/lottery wasn’t even an option. Am I doing something wrong, or are they just not available online yet? Has anyone else been able to apply online yet? Any help/insight is appreciated.

    Thanks

Sitting in our shack not too far south of you (mcGrath). Had a great encounter with a real tall & wide buck this afternoon….didn’t see enough of him to count points, but he was BIG. Looking forward to the snow, but could do without the wind. Might be enough snow to give me an excuse not to come home on Sunday….the roads up here aren’t real good (at least as far as the wife & the boss need to know). Good luck this weekend!

Very similar to Joel & James turkey hunting adventure. I feel like I’m in the woods while sitting at my desk. Love it!!
