Savage Axis scope mount

A few years ago I won a Savage Axis .243 at a bar for $10. This year I put a Timney trigger in it and a boyd’s pro varmint stock. Thought I could make a decent rifle out of it since it only cost me $10 and its not worth anything in trade.

The other night I picked up a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x40mm scope at the local Gander that is closing up. So now I would like to put a better scope mount and rings on it, but options are very limited for the rifle. I would also like something to allow me to pull the scope back a little closer. Its a stretch to get a good view with the factory setup. From scouring the internet it looks like a weaver style or one piece base/ring setup are my options. All of my other rifle have a Leupold dove tail setup, but it doesn’t look like they make such a thing for this rifle. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

Has anybody else worked with mounting on this rifle? What did you go with?

I use all burris XTR mounts and rings.

I have the weaver one piece rail on mine, gives more room to move your rings around and get the scope where you want it.
