On Weds. I had the occasion to speak with a couple of the biologists from the DNR fisheries headquarters in Lake City. They indicated that , while the ice appears good for the most part, care should be taken on lower lake pepin. Apparently the cold weather helps to increase the flow under the ice and this can erode the ice from the bottom up in areas where bars or rockpiles force the water upward. They were telling of one area where people had been driving one week and the next there was open water there. And a vehicle or two has taken the plunge this winter. The concern is with the snow on the ice now, there can be very little visual indication that things are not good underneath. If you venture out on any ice, be very careful.
