Might be worth poking your head out when it gets dark tonight. There’s been a geomagnetic storm in progress today. Kp value reached 8 out of 10 at 6:45pm which would give a good chance for viewable northern lights in many areas.

Thanks for the heads up! I normally like to keep track of such information but just haven’t had the time lately.
March 17, 2015 at 8:21 pm #1524495I don’t think I will see anything from my neck of the woods. For anyone else in the same boat here’s some real time pictures. (or so they say)
March 17, 2015 at 8:21 pm #1524497And I thought I was the only one on this website who knew what the K index was…….
This could be a good one tonight. The even started early this morning and it’s been going on all day. I’ve been sitting here with my Ham Radio talking to guys all over North America, we’re bouncing our signals off the Aurora like a big reflector. It doesn’t happen very often and it rarely lasts this long, so this is a big event.

March 18, 2015 at 8:11 am #1524644Is there a good site that will help a casual observer know when and where his/her best chances for seeing the aurora are? My wife has never seen them, and I’d like to show them to my kids, as well.
