Last Minute Trip A Month From Now

Where would you guys go if you had the last week of September/first week of October (26th-4th) to take a trip somewhere this year? We just got official word from the casino on Devil’s Lake that our cabin reservation was cancelled, so now we’re looking at our options. Looked at Erie, but apparently most of the fish are still pretty far to the east, so not only would we be gambling on the wind, but we’d be gambling on guessing where they’ll be at in their migration in a month. So that’s probably out. Currently looking at Sakakawea, because I’ve heard a lot of good things lately. But I’ve always heard the fall bite can be tough because they aren’t concentrated nearly as much as other parts of the year. Also courting with the ideas of Fort Peck and Sturgeon Bay, but don’t know much outside of what I’ve seen on TV shows about either. Lake of the Woods is always an option, and I haven’t ever fished the fall river run, but we’ve also fished it pretty regularly over the years, and once this year already.

So we’re based out of the Twin Cities, but obviously willing to travel pretty much anywhere. So if you had a week off one month from now, where would you go? Thanks guys.

Have you looked at other resorts on Devil’s? I just checked Woodland and did a search on a cabin for 4 on those dates and found an opening.

I will be up on Rainy Lake fishing from 10/1 thru 10/4. If the bite on the lake is tough, we will trailer the boat down river and fish the shiner run

I did email Woodland, but haven’t heard back yet. And is the shiner run on Rainy usually in full swing by the start of October? Just wondering if we would expect to be able to fish down by Four Mile, or be running up to Frontier or Birchdale. Thanks guys.

Last year our first 2 days on the lake were tough, we went to Birchdale and did pretty good. It was our first time fishing the river so I cant tell you if what we experienced was normal or not to be honest. The river was high and current was moving

I’d go duck hunting. Or at least somewhere for a Fin and Feather trip

That time of year can be lights out or completely turned off, at least for my group. If you want to fish a lake, i would choose somewhere that has two species that you would enjoy targeting. Then if one is shut off, hopefully the other is biting. Mille lacs walleye and smallmouth is an option, unless you were looking to eat walleyes.

X2! You can fish either the south east corner of the lake or the river.

x3, I’ve never been but that’s at or near the top of my MN bucket list.

We take our fall RR trip last 2 weeks in October. It’s usually a last minute reservation based on conditions. One year we had 15 footers on the lake and blizzard conditions, you just never know but it’s just a magical place in the fall. Hit the gap for eaters and the river for trophies.

Well the X’s have it! We booked the last available cabin at Wheeler’s Point, after striking out at Sportsman’s, Ballard’s, Adrian’s, and Borderview. To be honest, I shouldn’t have even had to think about it that much, I just took way too long to remember that you can fish for sturgeon in the fall too. I’ve hit the Rainy every spring for the last decade chasing em, but didn’t make it up this spring thanks to everything shutting down.

We did get the option of staying at Woodland in Devil’s, but it’s quite a bit more expensive than Wheeler’s.

Looking forward to it, be nice to have the options of Big Traverse, Four Mile, and the all along the Rainy, depending on where they’re at.

    Lockport!!!

Ironically the only other time I’ve fished LOW in the summer was this June, when we were up there because we had to cancel our reservations at the hotel in Selkirk…Already planning a trip for next Labor Day though!
