When fishing for bass it seems more likely to catch the 40 inch pike around here. :grin. I have caught an extremely thick 40 and a rather skinny 43 and both were incredible. While bass fishing I have landed a handful of 25-28″ walleyes but nothing anywhere near 30″. I’m on the look out for that 24″ largie and 22″ smallie

I’d have to disagree and go with the 40+ Ern. I’ve caught countless Walleyes over 30 but only a couple Northerns over 40″.

Wow countless eyes over 30″ Any pics??????? You must be a pro

Yep, I’m a bigtime professional! I grew up fishing BWCA lakes that produced many walleyes in that size range and nowadays it’s Pool 2 with the occasional up north trip. I’d love to catch a mid fourties Northern some day.

    The walleye.
The 40″ pike is more common.
too many 28″ and 29″ walleyes end up being “30 inches” at the “watering hole”— .

Different fishing styles = different trophy. I agree that 30″ walleye is much harder to come by then a 40″ northern. But your chances at catching a 40″+ northern substancially decrese when your fishing light tackle and typical walleye structure.

The same goes for northern guys, it is unlikely you will catch a 30″ walleye throwing spoons and plugs into typical northern feeding grounds.

So having said that, if you spent equal time fishing for each species…I gotta go with 30″ walleye being much harder to catch.

Same goes for 37, 38 & 39″ pike. They start growing pretty fast about an hour after they’re caught. By the time you get to the bar & grill, most of them are already 40″ long!

A local well-respected taxidermist once told me that from his experince, the average 30″ 10lb walleye brought into his shop was 27.5 to 28 inches long and weighed 7.5 to 8 lbs.

He also said the average 20lb northern he saw was 40″ and 17lbs….or a shade less.

I think he was spot-on accurate.

I’m not picky. I love to tangle with either or both on any given Sunday. Probably lean towards the pike since my PB is only 38 inches and that was in the boat on Vermilion.

I must admit that I absolutely loathe catching pike..but this one got my blood going. She was in some of the cleanest water I have ever found on the Mississippi and I watched the whole thing unfold!

If you had asked 50 inch northern or 30 inch eye it would have been a tough one… but with 30 and 40 the Eye wins. ..

I’ve caught both in my life but nothing will ever beat the excitement of the 30″ walleye.
