I normally go out and fish at the community area in about 6′ of water and have some action but with many smaller fish but i would like to venture out of this “comfort zone” and find a new spot. Any key locations that usually hold bluegill and crappie? Dont really understand what a “productive basin” area tends to be when looking at a topo map

For me when looking at a map I like to look for deep water close to spawning areas, but “deep water” can very from lake to lake. I fish lots of lakes were 20 feet is deep and I have fished some where 50 is deep, so for me there’s no magic depth. However I wouldn’t recommend targeting fish in deeper than 30 feet or so, unless you are planning on keeping them.

The most important thing to do though when searching new water for basin fish is to bring plenty of gas, and don’t get frustrated if you don’t mark fish right away, just keep cutting and moving.

    Good luck!!
