I’m looking for advise on a new fish locator/GPS unit to buy that is easy to use and transfer between boats if possible. Any suggestions?

If you can stretch a little over $600 I would suggest a HDS 5. I am a huge HDS fan. And for the price range I would go with that unit. I guarantee you will be happy. Easy to rig onto your boat. Built in GPS antenna in the unit so you can use it for ice fishing either on your truck or four Wheeler. That’s my opinion. The beauty of this website is that many people have different opinions and will give you good information on different units. Then you will be able to make a good decision on what will fit your situation the best.

It has a 9 volt battery the same for ice fishing and can come in either the ice version (ice ducer) or the summer version (boat ducer). Depending on which verson you buy you can buy the summer ducer or ice ducer. I also bought an extra summer ducer for my other boat. You can buy the navionics or lake master chip I believe to.

July 8, 2013 at 1:45 am #1182077I bought a elite 7 hdi without the down imaging for 599 this spring. I have been happy with it so far. I mounted it on the bow and able to follow the GPS while driving with my tiller.

Either way great unit but I will say the tax man gets his cut, plus if you like the warranty thing from some stores their is another $$, plus a mapping chip for it and possibly a cover will put you in the $800 range easily. Something to think about.
