I agree with what you guys were talking about everybody running to thebottom of 4. That run will be nuts as everyone goes through where pepin squeezes back down to the main channel. My guess is that somebody is going to find land the hard way! About the wingdam deal. Am I the only one who hates fishing those things, because it seems like if you are not there when the fish are busting you are not going to catch any decent fish. They seem to move off those things way too often! I think main river smallie fishin will be the big deal down there with the backwaters almost being dry. Although i have a feeling I won’t be the only one sneaking around in the lake down below pepin. I think a guy could make some side cash just pulling people of sandbars! I will be out there all this weekend trying to find some out of the way spots to get away from having to share a wingdam with 13 other boats! I will of course post a report but maybe not in great detail for obvious reasons Thanks for the information guys. Oh by the way how much time will it save a guy to run the wisconsin channel?

I’d guess at least 30 minutes if you are one to obey the no wake restrictions on the main channel. So maybe an extra hour of fishing time a day.

JerryPosts: 4August 27, 2003 at 4:09 pm #274412The last time I was there we left out of Colvill Park and I never went north, so I assume it is by Bay Point Park?
JerryPosts: 4August 28, 2003 at 11:55 pm #274668Have fished out of Treasure Island before and it’s a good 45minutes with the lock and the 3 no wake zones (don’t forget the one at Treasure Island) to the top of Pepin. It’s an hour run, now, down to Alma with the 2 no wakes in Wabasha (unless the dredging is done at Reed’s Landing) then it’s only a 50 minute ride. It’s longer coming back because you’re going against the current. Add at least a half an hour in case something goes wrong on the way back. Unless you have your limit early (No cull rule ), then time doesn’t matter as much. That back channel is tricky and have seen many boats spin out and a few loose lower units in water deeper than it is now, but it saves at least a half an hour. Is it worth a new lower unit and possible lost fish/points? Coming back is also tricky in the back channel when someone is pulling cranks right down the middle and you don’t see them till the last minute.
August 29, 2003 at 5:16 am #274718Relax man,
The dredging is finished and the no-wake in wabasha will not even be in effect because its only memorial day to labor day. Take the back channel and stay on her. This will mean no slow zones and a longer day of fishing.

The WI channel is as low as I’ve seen it but you can get through safely and quickly if you take the time to scout it. No need to fear breaking equipment… I ran Ecnook’s 21′ pleasure boat through there not too long ago w/o a single problem. You’ll be fine but don’t forget to budget some time to find your way in advance. The tricky area is immediately above and below the cabins on the back channel. Once you’re clear of this area you’re home free.
