There is a new tariff on lumber from Canada on top of everything else.

Canada is having covid problems still. To the point of closing businesses down. It sounds a lot different than here. Whenever they get past that maybe they can put out more lumber? Is the border even open for truckers yet?

The boarder is open for truckers, I really doubt it ever closed for truckers. I work on a custom glass tempering line and orders from Canada have been through the roof for a while now and it doesn’t help that orders from within the US haven’t declined either. We normally shut the line down for a week to do maintenance but didn’t do that in January because of demand

To be clear, this is a tax put in place by the US, not by Canada. Tariffs are taxes on IMPORTED goods. This 27% lumber tariff was put in place by the Trump administration in 2017. It was recently cut to 9%. Why wasn’t it eliminated? Pressure from the US lumber industry to keep prices up on the US side of the border.

Lumber has dropped a bit the last 2 weeks. OSB not so much.

I tell ya, sure am glad I’m out of new construction. I hear Lead times are insane.

Signs of hope. Plywood/OSB hasn’t leveled out though.

There is just no way I’m paying the ripoff prices. I must not be the only one. Lumber desk at Menards was like a ghost town, one poor lonely Menards guy there looing bored.

The good news is I’ve never seen so much lumber in stock at Menards. For once they’ve got everything because nobody’s buying any of it.

Hopefully, prices will keep coming down at the retail level.

Speaking of Menards. They and HD have the best prices by far right now. Just put in an order today and they had plenty of everything I needed.

Yup, all the projects I HAD to do this year I did but kept it minimal. All the projects I want to do regarding lumber are on hold until further notice. I’ll wait it out

True or not I dont know. Heard on the news this morning that prices should go down significantly soon. Said supply restrictions are easing so the companies hoarding to keep prices up will be forced to sell.

Just out of curiosity, who is getting the biggest slice of the pie in terms of these inflated prices? Loggers? the mills? distributors? retailers? or is everyone in the entire supply chain dipping their hand into this cookie jar?

JMO but I think everyone is adding a percentage because they can—the demand is there.

Just an FYI it will drop we have Potlatch mills up north that now have more lumber than demand. Demand is still high but with prices at al all time high and inventory high it will begin to drop.

I hope the prices keep dropping. I’m in serious need of a new deer stand this year. Looks like I’ll finally be able to afford it the weekend before rifle opener! yay
