Was trolling for muskies on Saturday morning. Just south of the mouth of the Kinni we had a small (probably 14 inches) shad looking fish that jumped right in front of my boat. It jumped about 16 inches out of water 3 or 4 times. I’ve seen plenty of different fish jump on the river but haven’t seen anything like this one. I think the Silver carp are bigger than what I saw.

Gizzard shad get pretty big…
Ralph, I think you got it. That is what it looked like. There is also a video on Youtube showing them jump.

They can reach sizes up to 20″ and 10-16″ is very common. Would not surprise me if they jumped that high. Kinni is a great northern and musky location, and also a great location for these big shad. Shad chased and flies out of the water… Common.
Shad are strong fish….I handled a few 15″ shad last night. Tough, strong, fast… But die when trying to keep alive.
