I asked the guy at Marine General, and he said that the water has just been really warm this year. Everything is delayed. Also, they haven’t been getting much rain. I am not the expert at predicting when the salmon run, but I get the sense that it is behind schedule this year.

Anybody with more experience have any idea?

Just went to the north shore to try out shore casting for salmon for the first time. I had low expectations since I have not seen anything about the run starting, but it is the weekend I have available this month.

Tried Two Harbors break wall for a while. Spoons, spinners, j13… no bites. French River was too windy to cast from shore even with a heavy kastmaster. Drove further south down the shore and fished from McQuade for several hours. Not even a nibble.

Even though it was an exercise in futility, I still learned a bit about shore casting on a big body of water. Also I got to do some retail therapy buying new spoons and spinners at Marine General.
