Try going to muskyshop.com (Rollie&Helens). Click on crankbaits, then click on the bait for discription. I think it’s 50% off internet orders if you buy.

Sumofrog; I’ve not fished Algoma, but shore fishing Lake Michigan from Port Washington in fall I’ve had a hand of goto baits. One if you can find but they don’t make anymore I guess, is a 3/4 oz. GLOW rattle trap. I’ve tried diffrent sizes and colors but haven’t had much luck with the other ones. Unfortunatly for me, one of my sons lost all 8 of the ones I had in 2 seasons. I saw some in the 1 oz. size at Gander Mt. but that might be too big. Glow green spoons seem to work good too.
My real personal favorite would have to be the Storm Thunderstick Jr. Green with orange belli& black stripes. Also like jointed Rebel Fastrac in the glow green.
One evening one of my sons caught a big King with a big Rouge in its mouth. He uses the deep divers with good success. Sorry I don’t remember the color he sticks to.
Some nights they go nuts, some nights they won’t hit hardly anything. Seems like when a fresh bunch roll in you’ll get a lot. One night no one around me was getting anything except myson on a dark orange reef runner. He say’s he’ll only do good on that one once or twice a season.
My best advice is to have the baits I mentioned above and then a bunch of others incase they don’t work. Sometimes you just have to throw the tackle box at them till you find what works. Get some high crome silver spoons, a good assortment of cleo’s, and some perch or clown colored crocadile spoons too! Have at ’em and good luck!
One last note. Use the glow colors during the day and not just when its dark. you don’t need to flash them till dark either.

I’ve used the glow baits at night and on some inland lakes I think they may spook fish. However, during the day right up till sunset, I will use them. My favorites are lighter colors on brighter days and the darker ones when its dark.
When the skies darken up like before a heavy downpour, glowblue/black can be super hot. Glow green which tends to look like a whitish green to me, tends to be good at early sunrise; sunset and overcast days. Yellow chartruese seems to be a good choice during the day.
However, I’ve never fished Mil lacs beleive it or not. So I can’t say for sure they’ll work there. It does seem that some places the glow paint doesn’t work, but I think its just matching the conditions at the right time. The only place I,ve seen the glow baits work at night with consistancy is Lake Michigan for salmon.
    Try them during the day.

Kevin Turner posted this on 9/13/06. It’s in the Miss. River gen. disscussion forum, with a little more info. I tried calling a local t.v. station about this ( channel 4 Milwaukee ) and they knew nothing about it. On a quick check of court rulings they found nothing, only some blogs on the internet. The guy said he would try a little more, but they get a lot of stuff on the net that gets blown out of proportion from what the real story was.
We need some people to call their t.v. stations and e-mail some senators or something to find out if this is indeed true. It is awful hard to beleive, but the way things are going I would’nt be surprised either.

Bet you get tired of dummies like me. I beleive I saw you explain this to someone else the other day but wasn’t paying attention. Sorry.

2catch1; I haven’t musky fished for years because of injuries but if you fish Random and don’t mind traveling, I’d try Pewaukee Lake. I’ve read a lot of good things about it. If you want to go to Vilas County I would agree Big Sand Lake. I admit I haven’t been there for a while, but there were quite a few just legals in there last time I was in Phelps. There is a lot of eurasian milfoil in that lake and this time of year you want to be careful motoring into the big flats of that stuff. Can be hard to get out of. Big Sand flows into Long Lake and fall can produce some huge ones. It’s a much harder to fish lake however. If you go to either of these lakes, take a few minutes to try by the boat landings: often overlooked. Good luck!

That had to be a great fight! I’ve never caught one near that size. Whats it like? Do they roll alot and try to break water, then run to the bottom. If you were there, how about some details on fighting that pig.

I don’t know, maybe it’s not those people eatting tasty animals(ya right!). Ever have a storm thunder stick through your finger with a 15# salmon jumping while still hooked to it. Or maybe they’re talking about the guy driving the boat cranking the motor sideways and gunning it out of the hole so you fall on the giant bucktail he left laying out and it goes through your hand. Sometimes fishing hurts. Never take a kid out musky fishing and get smacked in the side of the head from a good stiff musky rod? Or catch a musky lure in the back at the begining of a cast. Yes, fishing can hurt, but as long as it can heal, it can be funny.

    Hey Cade;
Sorry about your bad day. If it helps, we all have them. I enjoy reading your post. I like the details you put into and say what you think. You should keep all these things written down somewhere. You may be able to write a book about your adventures someday and make some extra money. At the very least, you’ll be able to look back when your older and put a smile on your face. Your kids would probably enjoy reading it too. Keep puttin’ in the details. Reminds me of when I was young. Write it all down, and while your at it slip in some dates, weather reports and other tech. stuff and you’ll have a fishing log to help duplicate the good days and improve the bad days. Don’t try to leave it all to memory,as you get older you’ll find that it dosen’t stay so sharp.

    Thinker;
Daredevil ( I think thats epplinger spoons ) Used to make a spoon like that, and they may still. There are other companies that make diffrent sizes of thin spoons on that order.
I used to use a small spoon like that with a minnow under a bobber for crappie and walleye. In the area of the Great Lakes you should be able to find these by diffrent companies in various sizes as they use the bigger ones with down riggers for trout and salmon. Good luck.

One of my cars is an older camry. Mostly drive during the day. I started noticing everyone was riding my butt when I went to make a turn or slow down. I also had to push the shift overide button to get out of park. I really don’t know if my dash lights worked or not. The problem was a breaklight switch, just under the break peddle. Had power going in, but not coming out. It also blew out the bulbs. Replaced switch and bulbs and everythings o.k. now. Shifts too. Not sure it’s your problem, but if your fuses are all o.k., it might be a switch.

I used to have a gmc van that was using a lot of oil. Every time I’d pass a car I’d loose a quart. Got some stuff at fleet farm. Sorry, can’t remember name. I think it was called motor medic or something like that. Was for stopping excessive oil consumption. If I get time tommorrow I’ll stop there and see if they still carry it and pm you. Things like that usally don’t seem to work, but after I added that I went about 2000 miles and traded in the van. It hadn’t used any oil in that time, even when I passed a car. Can’t say how long it works though. Might have to add at every oil change, but thats cheaper than a quart every 500.

fish; I found this site when it was fish the river. I registered and became a lurker. I thought I was becoming a member right away, but I’m just seen as a lurker. I ask how to become a member, was told I’ have to post to be a member. I have only 39 posts, maybe only started one topic, maybe more. Regardless of what some say about lurkers not joining because they want to just cause problems in forums, thats not my case, although I admit I have been misunderstood a few times while trying to get a point accross.
The reason I wanted to join was I have a place in Pepin,Wi. as an absentee home owner. When I get time to go there I like to check on the fishing. Also, sometimes I might have something to add. Like last year I told someone exactly where I was catching fish. Some people don’t like that but i wasn’t conserned.
Unfourtunatly for me, I was injured a few years back and had to sell my boat and towing vehicle to pay my bills on time. I don’t get to fish as much as I used to, and for now it’s almost all from shore. But I still catch fish, and sometimes they are big so its not that bad.
I see some people come right on as members but that didn’t happen to me. I guess I don’t talk enough or there is some other reason I’m only a lurker. If posting makes you a member I should already be one. I also can’t justify spending too much time here, as I am just starting to get the legal stuff put away, and am very busy with family. Maybe now I’ll have more time.
I rarely fish around where my main home is because I don’t enjoy the lake fishing around here with the constant crowds of water skiers, which do die off around sunset, but lately so do I. Till I get another boat that won’t change. But as far as I go, if what I’ve done doesn’t make me a member it’s fine. I get what I need being a lurker. It works for me. I’m not trying to be a smart allic about it because I don’t mind being on the edge of it. By the way this is the only web site I’m affiliated with at all, and seldom visit others. There is one in wi. that deals more with the places I used to spend more time fishing, but I hardly ever used it. Most of the fishing I have done in my life was northern Vilas co. Wi., but things change.
Now i’m going to bed, but I’ll try to check in tommorow. You can tell me how you became a member. Thanks-Cooker

I don’t know if this is even valid anymore. 30 some years ago I got to spend some time with relatives in Jefferson. There was a bridge behind the dam that went accross the river. Used to catch a lot of carp there in the summer, with an occasional cat. The only draw back was there were rats down there, but a portable radio kept them away.
I’ve often thought about going back there but never have. You see, when it would rain the water would fall from the open grates on the bridge into the river. This would bring the really big carp in. This is also the place where I hooked into the biggest cat I ever had on that I know of. It made a big run and came up out of the water and broke my line. My brother and I just looked at each other and couldn’t beleive the size of it.
Don’t know if the bridge is still there, but if it is it might make for some good summer fishing. Not exactly the info your looking for, just something to keep in the back of your mind for a rainy day.

I’m from Wisconsin and I agree this comp system needs to be revamped. However, I don’t agree that fraudulant claims are the biggest problem. I got a neck injury in Feb. of 2000. I just got my small compensation this January, and they are still trying to rip me off on what they agreed to pay.
They started to pay the bills in the begining. I called to make sure it was o.k. before seeking treatment. Then one day I saw I had a unknown carrier. I called them and they told me I was cronick and they didn’t handle cronics. By law they are to notify you before they cancle you. I found out that doesn’t matter much. SO my insurance company and I had a bunch of bills dumped on us.
Workmens comp. doesn’t get the dicount alotted to my health insurance carrier. They don’t pay my expenses the insurance doesn’t or lost wages when they denie your claim. So you get a lawyer and settle out of court for less than you lost just to get it over with. Your health insur. carrier wants to sue you for what they lost because it should have been a workmens comp. claim. Workmens comp creating fraud in the insurance industry? They spend a lot of money making it hard to get the compensation you are entitled to because you payed for it. Yup, they’re right there to get your money but don’t want to take care of you like they are supposed to. A lot of people let it slide because they don’t know what to do . They save money. You get a lawyer and settle for less, they save. They get the discount your insurance negotiated with the health carriers, and that can be huge if you need hospitalization and surgery. They very seldom get more than a slap from the law. Why should they do what they say they will for you when they know that by screwing around with you they save massive amounts of money? I’m sure they pay people pretty good wages to try to get you to not claim or stop claiming. The laws in place need to be tougher on comp companies AND need to be enforced so people can get well sooner and back to going on with their lives. I could rant on this for days but I’ll stop. Thank you. Cooker

I’ve got a place in Pepin with the river in the back yard ( just over the tracks of course ). I love to fish the river when I get over there, and was trying to find out more info on the water in the area. Came across fish the river, bookmarked it, and check it when I get a chance. It makes me feel close when I’m far away. Lots of good info. Thank you all.

Those glow in the darks are excellent on the great lakes for salmon and trout. Not sure how they’d work on the river. My experience with glow cranks on inland lakes and rivers has been the light green glows work the best, especially around sunset. Glow plastics work great all year.

Roots; I’ve often thought the same thing about some baits that work in lakes don’t work in rivers. I think it has more to do with color and location. I have caught walleye in certain locations and go to a diffrent type of lake, same time of year, and all I caught were northerns in same type of areas, same baits. Lakes and rivers are different challenges, requireing different approaches, which I’m sure your aware of. I think alot of what your talking about might just be color. I’m not the greatest on the river. For me I think it’s more location.
I used to not beleive you could catch walleye in lakes on plastic worms. Along time ago I got a free box of Berkly power baits as a promo or something. I was fishing a lake right after a cold front in early summer. I nor anyone in the boat was catching anything, so I decided to try a Power worm. Had like 3 small walleye grab them. I stink at rubber worm fishing so I have hardly ever used them. But I wouldn’t hessitate using the smaller power worms on eyes anymore. I’ve had luck with only one color. Chartruse (to me it looks like a bright, clear, light green. Tried them on the river and caught nothing. Used green power minnow right after and caught eyes? Next time try switching colors. I think that should help. Maybe smaller size worms in spring and pre-summer. Larger ones as you get more into summer. Good luck. cooker

Am; Life gets tough at times. I know what its like when you have a job you hate and the monies just enough that you can’t afford to leave. There is so much you want for your family and you really want to help others but you just can’t. It’s hard. Seems like sometimes you just don’t have a clue which way to turn. But remember your family! Live for them. And don’t watch the world news. Avoid people with negative attitudes. They just make you more angry.
My brother went through some bad stuff about 20 some years ago. We got him to get help finally after my dad broke into his house and got him to give up his gun he was playing russian roulette with as he was talking to me on the phone. That was one of the scariest nights for all involved. Unfortunatley for him , he lost a good bussiness, more importantly, a lovely wife and 2 kids because of the way things played out. They gave him extreme drugs to try to find out what was going on with him. One weekend they let him out of the hospital with a whole weekend of medication. He could’t get along with anyone so he was going to take it all at once and have it over with. My brother-in-law and i fought him for about an hour and I finally got his meds. No sleep that night, but we talked alot and that really helped. Being a young 70’s punk, I just had to try the meds they gave him. These drugs were horendous, turned you into a babbling idiot. Mayed you verbalize ever little, private thought. We got him off those drugs, and with the constant encouragement of family, and some visits to a cousin who is a psycologist, he got much better. He stayed with it and in the early 80’s again fell in love and has 2 kids. It’s not always easy for him, but life is a lot better now.
You say you don’t remember ever being really happy. How about the first time you met your wife? Your wedding day? When your kids were Born? You have been happy, it’s just hard to see through the fog your in right now.
Not sure if God is real? Think on this- If God is not real why do we divide time by Him? B.C. & A.D. ? To beleive God is real you need to beleive He left us a blueprint for life. He did. It’s called the Bible. The Bible is the word of God. Remember, our thoughts aren’t always His thoughts. There is a wealth of good advice in the Bible if you are willing to read it. For instance,in Philippians chapter 4 verse 8 you’ll find something great for you and all of us right now. Whatsover things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Even if you don’t beleive in God, this is good advice. Try reading a chapter a day from the book of Proverbs. It can make you a better person. A good church may be what you need now. To find one ask if they beleive the Bible is Gods word. If they don’t find another one. Remember people will always fail you at some point. The only perfect man to ever live was Jesus.
Life can get beter, you have to try. For yourself and than your family. You do need to be around people who will support you. A good pastor might be just the friend you need now. I’m not much of a church person anymore, but there was a time when my wife left me , took my kids and about everything we had, where if I would’nt had good caring people around me to encourage me I don’t know if I’d be here today. They helped me even when I didn’t always want them too. Today I’m not rich in material things, But I have my wife and family back. I got a great gift of being able to watch my kids grow up and help them through their struggles, and beleive me with one it was bad. But we kept with him and he turned around. The best part is the grandkids. Their worth ALL of it! Keep your mind on good things as much as you can. Try not to dwell on the negative. And why not call out to God and ask Christ to save you. You can always find Him willing to listen and help. You just have to let Him.

2fish: The dam was in West Bend. I realize a good part of the reason was the cost of repairs, but what of the end result? This city taxed ma &pa bussinesses that had been here so long they were the only thing these people knew, so they could stick a ton of money into a downtown thats a d.o.a. They waste very large sums of money on sculptures that are about as good as the big blue shirt Milwaukee almost got stuck with. I do think my tax dollars would have beem better spent to keep the dam. Not for me, but for all who live in the area. Sorry to rant.

Just wanted to express my opinion on this subject because I feel this is too often overlooked. Again, I’m sorry. catfishgirl; That article sounds good when you read it, but have you ever experienced it? I live in a small city north of Milwaukee,Wi. When I was growing up we had some pretty good fishing in the Milwaukee river, which flows through this town. Though most of these fish were carp and bullhead, you could still find bass and some big northerns without a lot of trouble. When the biggest dam at the end of town was removed, fishing stunk. Well then there was some restored habitat to help put the river back to its natural? state. Thats too involved to be anything but a joke in my mind. The fishing started to perk up again, mostly for game fish. The smallmouth were becoming dominant, and getting big as well. Northern and largemouth were coming back, even some walleye. Then out came the beautification committees. And canoe clubs. (Nothing against canoes, don’t get me wrong) They had to clean up the river! Sounded good. Than I saw what they were doing and had a confrontation with them. They cut down trees that hung over the river, pulled everything out of there that was in their way of navigating the now very shallow river. Somethings were good to remove, but not the trees that provide shade or shelter for the fish! To make a long story short, we now have a shallow river which doesn’t support much for big fish. The youth of this town lost a gem, but the town only seems to want these kids playing league baseball or going to the ymca or to stay at home. Too bad for the kids who don’t make it or can’t afford club memberships. Sometimes these things don’t work like they should. I realize economics sometimes make it impossible to do anything but remove some dams, but not all of them. These damed up waters can provide some good recreation for people too. I think if they can save them they should, and worry more about busting those who pollute them and why they do it. How many people alive have seen these rivers in their natural state? They may like them better the way they are. Funny how they can remove a dam to put the river back to it’s natural state but they don’t take out the filled in areas that have houses and such. One last comment. The Mississippi was once damless. I hope they never decide to remove the dams off of it.

Happened to me along time ago. Washed down the animals with flea shampoo, bomded the house, washed everything(tons of laundry). Worked for a little while, then they came back. Called the vet and they said you have to kill the eggs too. Evidently the cans of spray I had only killed the adult fleas and not the eggs. I would think that now there is something that would kill the eggs too.
Well, we all had to leave the house again and rebomb. The second time around it worked. A real pain in more ways than one. Good luck, and don’t be afraid to call a vet. They can probably tell you the best way out.
