News release: Walleye slot limit expands Aug. 1 for Mille Lacs anglers

    July 24, 2023

Allowing harvest of smaller fish offers more opportunity to keep a walleye

The minimum length of walleye Mille Lacs Lake anglers can keep drops from 21 to 20 inches beginning Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Mille Lacs’ one-fish limit will remain in place, but the change allows anglers to keep one walleye between 20-23 inches or one longer than 28. The previous limit was one walleye 21-23 inches or one longer than 28.

“With the catch rates we’ve had this spring and early summer, we can expand opportunity a bit for the rest of the open water season without harm to the long-term sustainability of the lake’s walleye population,” said Brian Nerbonne, central region fisheries manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The recent lower catch rate of Mille Lacs walleye is less a reflection of the number of walleyes in the lake than the abundance of natural forage. Minnesota DNR population models that incorporate test netting done each fall indicate that the number of walleyes in the lake longer than 14 inches has been similar from 2020-2023, but test netting shows an increase in the abundance of yellow perch from strong recent year classes. With more forage fish to eat, walleye have not been as willing to bite on anglers’ lines.

“Although the relaxed slot limit may not seem like a big change, the current size structure of walleye in the lake means this will increase anglers’ chances of catching a harvestable fish,” Nerbonne said.

Regulations for all other species on the lake remain unchanged. New walleye regulations will be announced in November for the winter season, which begins Friday, Dec. 1.

More information about fishing regulations on Mille Lacs Lake, ongoing Minnesota DNR management and research, citizen engagement and Mille Lacs area recreation opportunities is available on the Minnesota DNR website.

Quoted directly from the new regulation information given above by the DNR. Individual results may vary.

With more forage fish to eat, walleye have not been as willing to bite on anglers’ lines.

Allowing 2 or more fish is the next step I hope ! I was down at Hunters Pt on Saturday morning when the launches came in.. they had about 20 people on each launch fishing and from what I could see, they caught 2 and 3 keepers. If you go to the right spots, the fish are biting. waytogo

Saw this on KSTP last night. They announced the new rules, and then showed a picture of somebody holding up a Smallmouth. You can’t make this stuff up.

Has anyone seen a creel survey or any DNR person at a landing this year? I’ve been on the ML 18-20 days this year launching at both public and private launches and I’ve only seen 2 water inspectors. For a lake so heavily monitored for harvest, I expect more monitoring.

Yes. I was out there three times in May and encountered a surveyor all three times at the public access. No AIS/watercraft surveyors when I was there.

I was checked by a creel survey boy at the casino landing a few weeks ago.
I try to be polite but I had to shut him down after about the 30th question. How many 12-14″ walleyes, how many 14-16″ etc. Etc.
Then he started in on the bass and lost my patience. I’m all for helping them out but they aren’t making it easy to be helpful. I politely told him that I had answered enough questions

Thats why I almost always just answer “Didn’t catch anything”. Or for the AIS folks “Last place I fished was here”. “Next place I plan to fish is here”.

Keeps the interview short. And offsets the anglers who can’t keep an accurate count.

There’s a lot of jokes about the DNR and this rule change…that I will pass up since I’m an adult. rotflol But I honestly feel like they are taunting/messing with us with these sort of changes and announcements as if they are consequential positive changes for MN Anglers.

Were they also holding the rod upside-down?

This all depends on how your math works. They are giving us an inch by making it an inch smaller. …be an adult, be a mature adult…

Werm, don’t get too greedy there. Next year they may just narrow the slot again or go back to all C&R… smash whistling jester

Based on last weekend, there’s still plenty of fish in the lake. Bump it up to 2 or 3 fish between 16-18 inches Make it a tight slot, but let anglers actually keep some fish. There’s no shortage of hungry fish in there.

I saw no reluctance for fish to bite. I’d drop a bobber on their head and they’d swim up and eat it.

I was thrilled when I saw the headline the first time… Then I saw they’re giving another inch. Still not worth it.
