Just read the May issue that lists the Root River as a top 10 destination for smallmouth and felt I had to chime in. My brother and I grew up on the river. I think we’ve covered every spot from the Stewartville Bridge on Hwy 63 to south of Peterson and can validate for the smallmouth growth in numbers. I’m catching (and releasing) more smallies now than I was 15 years ago when we first started our canoe trips. This is a tribute to all the fisherman I’ve run into while on the river! Congrats and keep releasing!

My tip for this year: The last couple years of flooding have made it very interesting. Previous years’ pools may no longer exist. Some of biggest fish we caught last year came in “new spots”. Slow down and fish everything!

It was written by Tim Holschlag. He writes quite a few of their fishing articles and written about the Root before.
