I have a nephew that is going to be going to some water that has grayling in them. Will grayling only take flys or will they hit minnow imitations too? The nephew has never fished with a fly rod before but has used spinners for trout.

They will hit tiny spinners….OO Mepps etc…
Check with the local regs he may have to use a single hook on the spinner.
They are simply gorgeous fish…I have caught them while fly fishing remote Montana mountain lakes on a fly rod. They have very small tender mouths…you would need UL or light action rod, probably 4# test.July 18, 2007 at 3:25 pm #591530Grayling prefer small Black flies, have him pick up some clear casting bubbles if he wants to use spinning gear.I have also had good luck with super small panther martin spinners and a crappie spinner called the flicker, also sold as the widow maker.Pound for pound the fightinist fish alive!!!

That would be my recommendation also if you are using spinning gear.
