Nice! I hope I catch one of those in my lifetime. They are a cool looking fish.
January 11, 2012 at 12:03 pm #1026662Way to start it off, Doc. Saw that photo elsewhere. You’re onto the roughies big time. Color me green with envy.
the pyromaniacPosts: 44February 3, 2012 at 12:51 pm #1034972Yep, thought it was cool elsewhere, and I still think it’s pretty sweet! I’ve seen hogsuckers (northern and Roanoke) my whole life but never been able to catch one, so I’m living vicariously here…
Congrats!
April 3, 2012 at 1:01 pm #1055227Certaily is! Old Mitchell 304. I use 300s for channel cats and a monster 302 saltwater reel paired with a Shakespeare Alpha for my cheap flathead/sturgeon rod
April 3, 2012 at 2:06 pm #1055283Been waiting for pictures like these. Doug, I use an ultra light with a really light tip. I fish in the current with a circle and let the fish nip, nip, nip all they want. Eventually they eat it hook and all and turn, hooking themselves in the corner of the mouth every time. I can tell when the rod tip goes from tap, tap to deep bends.
April 3, 2012 at 2:39 pm #1055305I was using tiny #1 circle hooks as well. I was fishing that little impoundment lake on Rice Creek where the creek dumps in and the current there was pretty minimal. They would tap tap it, then go away for a minute or two and come back. Out of 2 hours of constant bites, that’s the only fish I caught!
April 3, 2012 at 3:43 pm #1055328I don’t like circles for suckers. I run baitholders or octopus hooks and cross their eyes.
April 3, 2012 at 3:48 pm #1055335What are you using for bait? I feel like a crawler is too big, so I use a 1/3 of a crawler or a regular earthworm usually.
April 3, 2012 at 4:23 pm #1055357True. IMO, if you have a large crawler, they just keep nubbing chunks of before even getting to the hook. That’s why I like the technique I use. I’ve used it to catch some pretty small fish too.
I’ve learned that my technique only works in fairly fast current though. Less current means they are not as likely to try turning with the bait and going down river. I learned after a couple gut hooks with a circle in low current.
April 3, 2012 at 5:01 pm #1055366I am just breaking off bits of crawler as needed. These are my little #1 hooks I use for catching chubs down at creeks in southern MN, so they gotta be tiny

I assume that, too, because he’s bitter that I outfished himApril 26, 2012 at 12:19 pm #1062700A few golden redhorse from yesterday. Feisty buggers! And as you can tell, they are feeling amorous.

What do they call those bumps again, horns?
In technical speak, I believe they are called tubercles.
June 18, 2012 at 9:45 pm #107684620 minutes to get this one in… amazing fight… a shame people don’t appreciate these beautiful beasts, nothing like it
June 19, 2012 at 12:33 am #1076878Mutant Sheephead from Green Bay. My boys get as exicited to catch these guys as they do catching big Eyes!
