NE Iowa got hit with excessive rain last night. Dubuque received several inches of rain and there is flooding going on. Roads to the north and west of Dubuque have been closed. The McGregor, Marquette, PDC, Bagley area took the brunt of the storm getting upwards of 8 inches of rain. Reports out of that area are of washed-out railroad tracks, mud and rock slides, floating cars and sunken boats. Houses reportedly washed off their foundations in the Bagley area. Reports of large propane tanks washed into the Mississippi so if you are crazy enough to be out on pool 10 today be very careful. Hopefully nobody gets hurt in all of this. In DBQ the rain began around 11pm and it rained all night.

Can you guys PLEASE send some of that rain up to the Twin Cities?
We have no flow!!!
July 18, 2007 at 2:53 pm #591515I’d love to send some of it up north. It has been very dry here in Dubuque the past few weeks. We had rain on July 3rd but that came so hard and fast that it didn’t get a chance to soak in. The river has been very low with wingdams sticking out here in pool 12 and that almost never happens. This rain will make the river bust up a foot or so but fall just as quickly. What we need is for the headwater areas of the Mississippi amd Wisconsin Rivers to get a 10 day soaking. The heavy rains last night pretty much followed the river valley down so much of the rain will run off quickly.
July 19, 2007 at 2:53 am #591748I’m a little new to the river lock and dam deal, but if there’s flooding south do they try and hold back the river north by closing gates on up-stream dams.
July 19, 2007 at 12:54 pm #591840jimt, normally that would be the case but there isnt much water, so the dams are holding as much water back as they can any way. The flooding wasnt caused by the Mississippi it was caused by the run off of the hills.
