Went out yesterday on Lake Mendota in Madison. I was fishing weed edges with nightcrawlers and caught two nice bluegills. One 9 1/2″ and the other was 10 inches my new personal best bluegill. The bite was slow. I also got a bunch of little smallmouths and some sheepheads.

Awesome Bluegill! It takes a special Bluegill to hit 10″ and it looks like you found one. Congrats on your personal best!!

Great job and congrats on the bruiser gills

Them dinner plates can really swim a vicious circle

When the boats use to load up at Govn. Island for the perch we would stay out of the crowd for them bruiser gill that lake supports. Crickets were a killer for us that time of year.

    Congratulations
on the PB Bluegill, that 10″ mark has eluded me for too long. At least someone else it hitting it.

Thanks for the tip about the crickets Bret. I’ll have to try them.

Thanks everybody for the nice comments. It’s really fun catching those big gills. I’ve never caught a bluegill under 8″ in Lake Mendota. It’s pretty amazing. Last year My wife and I were out trolling small crankbaits for white bass and she hooked one of these nice big gills. I couldn’t believe it.

Congrats! She sure is a pretty fish. I miss fishing gills. Reminds me that I might need to get back to some of the simpler things in life.

    Thanks for the post!

Oh yea! Mendota holds some monster bluegill. If you get in the right spot, I’ve had days where most of the gills caught were over 10″. Some were pushing 11″.

Better late than never… Nice gills! Mendota has some monster gills. Milemark_714 and I use to hit that lake for years. Put many 11″ gills in the boat and on the ice there. I have a video of what would have been a state record I caught there in ’93. Never thought about a 13″+ gill being that big until after I ate it and everyone freaked out on watching the video.

    Something like filleting a 17 1/2″ Crappie?

I measured it… thought ,should I mount it?….and put the knife to her…..
I STILL regret that decision to this day
