Any thoughts on the subject from some locals??? If there isn’t a sense of urgency yet, there should be. Just look at ANY lake that has been netted during the spawn, they have been destroyed and special regulations have been put in place to protect the netting, not the sport fishing.

I am local and this is the first i have heard of it.
All i can say is it dosnt sound like a good idea to me. we need to put a stop to all netting ASAP!April 3, 2015 at 9:33 am #1530396Good luck, nothing we have done here on mille lacs has worked. The fond de Lac band has declared to net vermilion this spawning session. Only 2500 pounds…..just remember, mille lacs started out at”only enough for ceremonial purposes” good luck and enjoy the up coming slot changes to protect the fish that get netted. Go to the general discussion page and look at the “which lake is next” post and follow the Link to read the article.
April 3, 2015 at 9:45 am #1530400If I had a place on or near Vermillion, I would be contacting everyone I know to attend the Governor’s opener and let him know your concerns. Heck if something got organized I would change my plans and head that way!
April 3, 2015 at 10:20 am #1530409Given that Fortune Bay Casino is the headquarters for the Governor’s opener, We will be lucky if the Governor does not end up in the netting boats with them.

April 6, 2015 at 8:44 am #1531270Do t rely on the mndnr to be there and watch and keep track of the take. The co’s will be as far away from the lake as they can be. The only person representing the mndnr will be a creel survey member that takes the poundage numbers from the natives. The same natives overseeing the netting will be netting themselves. Fox in charge of the henhouse so to speak. I have watched it first hand for the last 10 or so years here on mille lacs.
April 6, 2015 at 9:32 am #1531297remember they are “respectful of the resource”. (stocked by MN with OUR tax dollars). That’s why they choose to net during the spawn, that makes perfect sense… What a joke.
April 6, 2015 at 2:06 pm #1531455Don’t forget, not only will they be netting walleyes. There will be a quota on northern pike and musky. That is where they need to be watched, they will knock those fish out of the nets before they reach the boat so they don’t hit the northern and musky quota before the walleye quota. Once a quota is reached of any species, all netting must stop.
