Huge Crack on Mille Lacs

There’s a new crack that opened up overnight that runs the north shore down past Garrison from what I’m hearing. Sounds like search and rescue has been busy assisting people back to the “right” side of the crack.

This photo is from earlier today from the NE corner of the lake.

    Be careful out there!

Here is a picture from barnacles. There access is closed and red door is only allowing walkers inside the crack.

Cracks happen all the time but what I find interesting about this one is the wind is actually out of the south. Typically this type of thing happens with an offshore wind. In this instance that would be a wind from the north. Mother nature is always throwing curveballs. I assume this means there was a wind from the north at some point that caused the crack and now the wind from the south just isn’t strong enough to close it back up again.

Yeah there was still plenty of open water earlier in the week. Not seeing any reports of getting people over the crack from any of the resorts. Not saying it didn’t happen just not seeing those updates from barnacles red door or garrison sports. So hopefully they got everyone on the the other side safely. Looks like the wind over next couple days is going to be doing 180s from south to west to north. So stay safe folks.

One of my buddies was out there when the crack opened up. They ended up getting help from someone with a flat bottom row boat. They are all ok but still not a fun situation. They had to leave their gear out there because the boat wasn’t big enough.

Going to be interesting to see what happens tomorrow if we get the high winds!

Guessing that was James and crew from the Red Door making the rescue – I was in there Saturday mid-morning and he mentioned having to get the duck boat out to traverse the open crack. Spent a few hours fishing directly across from the abandoned gear, catching a couple decent walleye. Hope they were/are able to get their gear back.

I believe they were able to get their stuff. They were probably fishing right next to you the next day while they were waiting to get their stuff!

i’m 63 years young, i dont hit those huge big lakes often, but it still truly amazes me what the ice on those lakes can do.

    What a mess!

That’s why you don’t fish Mille Lacs (or any other big water, like URL) until it’s completely locked up in the center.

Looks like it’s moving away from red door rapidly

50mph winds, 7-12″ of snow are not going to help. Wish we would have gotten the 0 Degree temps for a day or two prior
