Hair of the dog and not just the morning after !

My border collies shed hair on a daily basis, sometimes in tufts. I’ve tied deer tail hair on light jigs in the past and caught fish but recently noticed the action was not much when retrieved very slow or under a float so I tied my dog’s hair to a 1/16 oz ball head jig.

On the second cast it caught this 12″ plus crappie:

    …and then this large sunnie:

The day was sunnie with no wind which is usually the toughest to fish. The hair jig did well and I’m dumping my feather and deer hair jig material. No point in keeping stuff no longer needed (got too much of that stored already).

There is some great stuff out there. Arctic Fox looks awesome in the water, craft fur works well too. Remember Troll Dolls? The hair off of those things works well on jigs.

I have made lures and jigs from troll dolls and they do work.

The hair on the back of my Springer’s legs [feathers] was long and straight. He loved baths so after getting him all primped up I’d snip away at that hair and bag it. Made wonderful hair jigs that both walleye and crappies liked. White and brown hair….the white, I’d use colored permanent markers to dye whatever color I thought I needed.
