Rainy River spring open water fishing

    I know that open water fishing on the river can be quite fun in the spring. Can anyone give me some information on when this usually heats up? Mid-April, correct? Was thinking of giving it a shot this year. Thought I’ve fished Rainy Lake for 10+ years now, I’ve never done the river. Was hoping to get some more info from some of you guys who have done this before.

    I believe the season closes around April 14th usually.(check the regs) I have never done this bite but it heats up as soon as the river opens for boats. (ie; the accesses lose their ice so you can launch a boat)

    I have not double checked this years date but typically the walleye season closes April 14th. This will be the first year in quite a while we will not be making the trip up due to slow conditions.

    As soon as the river opens is great – once it gets dirty with run-off – it really slows down.

    The dates vary with the timing of Spring.

    Closes April 14th till MN opener.
