Looking at a recent picture of my grandfather’s head stone I noticed it is inscribed SC3, can someone tell me what that stands for, I assume it is a rank? Can someone tell me how I might be able to research his military career or how my father may have access? Unfortunately I never got to meet him and I am interested in knowing a little more about him.

    Thanks!

My bro was in the Navy. I’ll send him the link and see if he knows.

Jason, your Grandfather was a Third Class Petty Officer Ships Cook (CS3)in the United States Navy. The Ships Cook rating was changed after WW-II to Commissaryman (CS). Some good info here about USN enlisted ratings: http://bluejacket.com/usn_ratings.html

    Fair winds and following seas,

    Dr. J,
Thank you for taking the time to post. I followed the chart on the link you gave me. Wonder what my grandfather would think about being called a Culinary Specialist.

SC Ship’s Cook (1893-1948) (to CS)
    CS Commissaryman (1948-1974) (to MS)
MS Mess Management Specialist (1974-2004) (to CS)
    CS Culinary Specialist (2004- )
