Want to take our family vacation (summer ’04) on Devil’s Lake. I’m convinced it is the place to go, but I need some help convincing the wife. What things (other than fishing) are there for the family to do? Need to keep the wife and kids happy also (kids are 10 & 7). Other questions are – best time of year (June, July, or August) to get in on a good ‘eye bite; where is a good, clean, on the water place, to stay; & how soon does a person have to make reservations. Thanks in advance.

I recommend West Bay Resort on the north shore of the Minnewaukan Flats or the west bay. It is two years old with very very nice cabins (5) Each cabin is at least 50 yards apart, two bedrooms, full kitchen, satellite TV, grills, in cabin freezers, indoor fish cleaning. You can leave the gear in the boat, keys in the ignition and not have to worry about bringing the stuff in at night. They have a private dock. Diane is a clean freak and keeps them spotless. Pets are welcome.
Three miles from Minnewaukan (pop 375?) and gas, groceries a smokefree bar/grill and the baitshop. And me
Guides like me are available.

November 7, 2003 at 12:14 am #281098We are a very rural area and you have to make your own fun. We do have some very neat things to see from a nature perspective. We have more wetlands and ducks and deer than almost anywhere in the world, just go for a ride in the country at sunset. We have a Sullys Hill National Game Preserve were elk and bison roam free. Hundreds of bison on pasture. The obligitory Indian casino on the rez. Miles of unhabitated shoreline for the kids to walk and bug the geese and pick up all my lost shad raps on.
We had a period in the summer last year were we caught a hundred small eyes in a two hour period when the temp was in the 90’s. That would keep the kids busy!!! One of my clients who had fished Canada and Lake Erie and caught 10 pound plus eye’s there said this was more fun. He could barely keep two lines going. I’d unhook a fish, he’d give me the rod, I’d hand him a baited one, and we repeated this non stop for an hour. His guest just sat and read a book.
This doesn’t happen all the time but I did it for 4 days straight in the same spot. We only went out for half days.
June fills up very fast. July next and so on .Fishing was good all summer. It just changes. Heck it is different here every year.
