Forestry project pruning

All the oaks are great and not much to do. The pines are a few years away, so proving great cover for the deer. But these dam cherry trees are a puma. Dang things keep bushing out and keep taking on the form of a bush than a tree. We banged out a couple thousand trees today and about 6 thousand more to go.

Well, the forestry guys call it pruning….I call it removing the bullet hazzards.

That’s alot of heavy pruning! Do those produce lots of fruit?

The cheery is American cherry and they produce a lot of tiny cherries for the birds.

The Burr oaks are already producing acorns. Pretty impressive amounts for such a young tree.

We will be doing selective harvest on these trees as they age. The pine first, then cherry. The pruning gets them to just the main trunk and straight/tall. Regardless of the harvest, for me it’s all about building more habitat

I will be doing the same with a stand of about 50 to 100 sugar maples I’m starting this year. I won’t see the mature result, but my grandkids will.

    but my grandkids will.

Maybe its my age, but I really don’t know a more rewarding feeling than to know we are passing along something , back to the environment, our kids, our grand kids…that we know will be of benefit – yet we will never see the end result. Kudos to you! toast toast toast
