Hi. I am currently looking at buying a 2006 40 horse e-tec motor. Just wondering what you all think of e-tecs and if you have heard of any problems with them. Thanks for your reply in advance.

We have 2 of them as rentals…very good running motors and great torque. One downside,is cold weather. The oil reserve is under the hood, and until it gets warm enough,it goes in safe mode. If you are a cold weather fisherman,it might be a factor. They are easy on gas and oil consumption as a plus.
Here are a few posts close to that year motor.

If you switch to full synthetic oil in the fall you won’t have that issue. I know the manual says if you are going to run the motor in 32F or colder you need to run xp100 oil. I have never had an issue, but that oil stinks, and is spendy.

Wondering is what I did a lot of with my E tech. Wondering if it was going to start. Wondering what the mechanic would guess to replace this time. Wondering how much it was going to cost to repair and wondering when I was going to get my boat back so I could use it again.
One time I wouldn’t need to wonder about the E tech was in cold weather. It was very reliable that it just would not start. 3 new starters, new batteries, 100 oil, it didnt matter.
There is a fix for all these issues with the E tech. You just need to get the Yamaha up date installed. Even on the E techs best day its not a Yamaha.
75hp tiller is what Im running.
