Smallies!

We had a great day on Burntside. The goal was to get the four teens on fish of any species and any size, so we dodged the worst of the 30-mph gusts but anchored and fished with slip bobbers and leeches/crawlers where we had some wave action.

The group went home with some nice fish for the grill, and New York City Nina, pictured here, landed the big fish of the day, a 19.25 inch smallmouth.

Surface temps have dropped from as high as 74 down to 65 on Burntside during this last week or so of cooler weather and windiness. Leeches outfished crawlers. All fish came from 6 to 20 FOW. We’ve had quite a few smallies over 3 lbs so far this season. While the size structure of Burntside smallies tends to be significantly on the low end, quality fish can be had.

We’re still tearing up the smallies. I’ve been out with quite a few folks who simply want to put themselves and their kids on fish on Burntside, regardless of species. Enter slip bobbers and leeches.

Today’s big fish was a 5.25 lber that Tim landed on 6 lb line. Combo of rock, sunken timber and a sharp breakline.

Don’t know why it included both photos. Sorry about that!
