Different Ranger Hulls and Layouts Over The Years

    I’m starting the process of looking for a used Ranger — most likely a 2005 – 2006 619/620 (maybe a 621) with a target motor of a 250 Yam 4-stroke. I know there’s been a few hull design and layout changes from 2005 and 2006 and then in 2008 for the 620.

Can anyone explain what the differences were? Would any of these changes steer you clear from a particular model year? Things like I believe the 2005 620 had batteries stored above the floor vs. in floor the next year. Or how does the 2005 620 hull compare against 2006-07 and vs 2008? THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 08′ hull redesign made the bow ride higher in waves. The 05 and 06 that you are looking at take waves over the box much easier and you have to work the throttle more to keep the bow up when running with the waves more than the 08′ and on. If you could swing and 08′ I think you would be much happier in the long run. Both are good strong hulls and you can’t go wrong but they have gotten better with time.
The Yammis are tough to find. When they come up you have to act fast.

Was fishing the Detroit River 2 weeks ago and was amazed at how many Rangers I saw on the water over there that had Yammie’s on them. Check around the Ohio area for something with Yamaha”s on them.

I’ve owned two rangers in the past 4 years. The first one was a 07 620 VS, the hull design was bad. I took waves over the front and it didn’t cut waves cornering very well at all. My only complaints of that boat. The one I have now is a 12′ 620 VS and the new hull design with a more pronounced keel is awesome. The cornering and riding on plain is way better than the 07′, hands down. And I have not yet taken a wave over the front yet, I have been in my identical boat on Erie last spring with six footers and it preformed great. I’ll have no problem buying another one!

I was looking last fall and after reading a lot about the 620s I ended up going with a new noncurrent 13. From what I read the newer hull changes fixed the wave Speer the older ones had. The 621 did not have as bad of a problem since the hull is a little different on them.

Good luck it is frustrating for sure to find one with a Yamaha since around here it is almost impossible to find one. That is why I got my 13 it was the only new boat for sale with a Yamaha on it and I got sick of looking at beat used ones

Walleye central has a lot of info also on the 620

The 621s prior to the redesign in 2010 were also prone to take waves over the bow when trolling, same as the 06-07 620s. I’m sure they all still perform well, but the best will be the most recent hull designs. You may want to do some research on the older hulls/Yamaha F250s, if I recall they weren’t the best performing boat/motor combo.

A friend had a 05 or so 619 w/200hp Yamaha. That boat really pounded in a moderate chop. He did trade that boat off on a 621, that did fix his problem of the pounding ride in a moderate chop.

Thanks for the replies so far. As far as the 06/07 620 hulls vs. the 08, I know there’s some spearing issues, but is the 06/07 hull something you’d still be happy to own/no regrets buying or is it 08 or bust? I own a ’04 1900 Pro-V with a 225 Honda to compare against.

I think it all depends on what type of water you fish. If it’s mainly bigger water/bigger waves, I’d personally hold out for a 08 or newer hull 620. If your off the lake any time there’s 2 footers, any hull will work fine.

I fish a variety of sized lakes – the Canadian side of LOTW and northern MN lakes like Cass, Leech, Bemidji – and smaller lakes, too.

I have a 2006 619 with a 200 Etec. Was up to LOTW this week. I have all the issues they talk about with the hull. But with that being said its a great boat. We fish Green Bay to the croix and Mississippi. If you have any other questions send me a pm

They will all take water over the Bowie conditions are right, but the 08 and newer 620 will be the best. I have an 09 620 and even on the reservoirs here in Nebraska I take one every once in a while.

Did they rework the 620 hull again in 2014 or so?
