Looking at getting into a 09 ram quad cab. Has the 4.7. My current boat is not very heavy and my next boat is likely to be an 18″ alumacraft. Anybody have any experience good or bad with the 4th gen rams and the 4.7?

Don’t go with it. I just got out of an 09 with a 4.7. I was lucky to get 10 mpg pulling a 17′. That truck was nothing but problems for me. Had to replace entire suspension and 4wd.

4.7 is notorious fir being under powered and unreliable

I had the 4.7 in a 2000 Dakota and it was quick and powerful. Then it blew a head gasket. I Traded that truck in for an 06 Ram also with a 4.7, and around the same time got a bigger boat (16 foot Lund Predator). The 4.7 felt “smaller” in the bigger, heavier truck. It pulled the Lund around without any troubles at all. The only time I felt the boat was when I was coming to a stop, the extra weight meant stepping into the brakes a little sooner. Now I have an ’18 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi, and the only way I know the boat is still behind me is when I check the rearview mirror.

Don’t have any experience with the 4.7 but I’m guessing the resale will be crap. Something to consider perhaps

Was that in 07? Sorry couldn’t resist. How old was the truck when you traded?

LOL That was in 2018. It had low miles and no rust, but I was still surprised at the trade in value.

I have a 18 now with a 5.7 and I really like this truck. More then enough power the only down fall was the weak suspension in the rear. I had to add helper bags in back the kind that you add air when hooking the boat up. Besides that I love it

You should have traded 3 more of them at that price. I hope you drove away real fast…

I cannot believe what people will pay for used trucks. I have a relative who has been trading every year for the past 4 years. Between the incentives and the fact that he has zero maintenance and repair expenses, he’s seriously done the numbers and figures it’s the cheapest cost per mile way to own, mostly because the silly-stupid trade-in he gets for the 11-month-old used truck means so little depreciation. His trade in has never sat on the lot for more than 2 days. It sounded crazy counter-intuitive to me, but he’s probably right.

The only ram I ever owned was a 4.7, back then I had a cabin so I towed an 18 foot tin boat a few times a year a couple hundred miles, never anything else other than a lawn mower on an aluminum trailer. When I got rid of it it needed its 4th transmission. Bought it with 18 thousand miles on it, got rid of it 126 thousand miles on it.

Well it appears to me that truck has its obvious problems. Did a google search and seems to be a lot of problems with that vehicle but to each there own.
