My Weekend

Spent the weekend with my son on his first turkey hunt. The early morning hours and hiking up and down valleys took it’s toll on him and he napped while I went back out late Saturday. Ambushed this bird as he was coming back from the field. 23# 11oz 7 3/4″ beard.
Needless to say the boy was full of energy Sunday. Had deer stalking the decoy as well as a coyote that spooked just before he shot. And a real nice Tom that just wouldn’t commit. Was great to be out with him though. We’ll see how the last couple days go with late afternoon when he’s home from school or maybe an early morning jaunt.

Nice bird Sgt. Rock. If you really want to make it easy on your little guy just come up to my house in Shoreview (Twin Cities) We had 32 turkeys in the back yard on Sunday morning. They were in the yard for about an hour then wandered off. I thought my lab was going to tear the house down trying to get at them. Love2Fish.

Nice bird Rock…congrats. I had my son with me this past week as well (he’s 8 years old – second year going with me)…he ended up spending a little time napping as well! Snoring is more like it. Good job on your bird!

    Nice bird Sgt!!!!!

Did the bird have some beard rot going on or something? Looks like a thick beard, I would’ve guessed a bird of that size would’ve had a little bit longer beard on him especially giving the thickness of it. How long were the spurs?

The end of the beard was pretty trashed. Guess he walked bent over alot. Spurs were about an inch. Had two Toms working tonight for the boy but the wind made calling tough and they like the warm fuzzy hen more than the plastic kind. That and road traffic was bad. Still two days for him.

good job! This weekend was my first turkey hunt ever and i had a blast! Actually i never got to pull the trigger, but I was amazed how addicting turkey hunting is…i think we saw like 5 birds out of 2 days of hunting. Pretty slow. As you can imagine with the rain, it was really really cold. Early saturday was the best, they were gobbling right away and we thought we had a tom coming in, as the gobbles were getting progressively louder, but then it disappeared. About 45 minutes after that, my uncle called in 2 hens. This was as close as i have ever gotten to a wild turkey and it was so cool. we were hoping they would bring a tom or two with them but it wasn’t ment to be. The only toms we saw this weekend were when we were moving to a new spot and we came around the bend of the ridge road and there were 2 toms about 50 yards away at the most. We tried to get into some cover and my uncle got down to the tree quick enough but they saw we sitting down and they took off. Pretty disappointing. Too bad the weather couldn’t have been more cooperative. Funny thing is,even after so many long hours in the woods this weekend with no success (I fell a sleep 3 times too ), i still got a burning feeling to get right back out there and do it again.

Thanks Guys. The kid never connected on one but I think he got hooked. We had active birds evrytime we were out but hard to get them away from the hens. The last evening we had 3 jakes come in from across the road at a dead run and they stopped about 100yds out. I couldn’t grow a beard on any of them thru the binos so we just watched and had fun. They came in and worked around the 2 decoys for over an hour with the closest range of about 15yds. Finally two real hens came over to check out all the noaise and lead them away. Was fun hunting and great spending time with my son.
